I was playing skyrim on a 1.2gb card...at 2560x1600 all maxed with FXAA, the game itself pulled 1.6 to 1.7gb of VRAM...however my 1.2gb GTX 560ti 448 cores still played the game fine, without tanking like a rock.....btw I know the game pulled 1.6-1.7gb of VRAM, cause when I changed to a GTX 670, thats what it showed
So reality is, you REALLY have to push the VRAM before your fps starts to tank....I just find it funny how people get heart attacks over 2gb of VRAM...and their only running 1080p

I base my experience on this mostly on Crysis 2. My 470's ran that game very well maxed out at 1920x1200. Of course I saw like 1230MB vram usage cause that's all I had (well, 1280 actually but you never see full usage) but when I switched to my 670 I discovered I'd been running settings that used 1700-1800MB of vram all along.

Now, the game DOES hold 60fps a bit more consistently on the 670, however, the larger drops that I used to see before (down to the 30's) are still there, and seem to be triggered by either water (like in the sewers under city streets) or by there being just a TON of stuff going on/wild fire fights with tons of effects, etc.

IOW, it doesn't appear that I was getting much (if any) vram limitation even running 1800MB of usage on a 1280MB card. That's a rather huge % overage that if it also held true for a 2GB card would imply it could actually handle 2880MB of 'usage' according to a tool like AB.

Different games of course will react differently in this regard though. It mostly depends on how efficient the texture caching and pre-fetch mechanisms are. In reality any given scene in a game is never going to involve the display of anything remotely close to 2GB worth of data in the form of textures + frame buffer + AA and whatnot. So slowdowns only actually occur when the card goes to display something it was unable to properly 'plan for' and cache in advance.

You are right about the Crysis 2 stuff. When I had the 570's I noticed the same thing, specially when shooting continuously at water

yup, I remember lagging when shooting at water...or throwing boxes and letting it bounce on the water

in all seriousness though, you have to REALLY go above and beyond the VRAM limit in order to tank your FPS...IMO, you will hit a "graphical horsepower" limit way before you even hit the VRAM limit....in other words, your GPU will run out of processing power way before VRAM limits need to be worried about

with that said, 2gb of VRAM is still good enough for everybody running single monitors...yes that includes guys with 2560x1600....until we start seeing 4k x 2k resolution monitors, Nvidia is not worried in the slightest about adding atrocious amounts of VRAM and wasting money

So I was just running Heaven for the first time.. first at my 1275/1602 and I got a few artifacts (at least I assume that is what the random screen flash was). I set it back to stock speeds.. and was still seeing the occasional artifact. Thoughts guys??

FYI: Temp never broke 61 degrees. I am really confused, sometimes it seems like it is just a portion of the 3D rendering flashing sorta like just an error, but I am not sure if they are actually "artifacts" or an actual issue. Either way, the same type of "artifacts" occur on 1275 as they do on base 1175 boost.

Did you try a different driver?

I run heaven pretty frequently on many different GPU setups...and Heaven never runs perfectly. There are a few times during the whole 26 scene benchmark, where it will flash or give what appears to be an artifact. I would fear not...just try playing a game out and see if you can duplicate the results

Ok cool. unfortunately i am also combating an obnoxious possible issue with my motherboard starting to go. My computer has been doing this very odd freezing during games where the sound cuts/loops and the game freezes and I have to hard restart. Sometimes it happens just when web browsing.. and in this case I can alt-tab, mouse around, but I can't ctrl-alt-del or open windows menu or anything, it is essentially hung up. Is this a driver crash, is it video card related? Or is my nforce 790i SLI ultra overheating and dying? I am really having a hard time trying to isolate the issue and since a recent financial hit makes it tough for me to get a new mobo/proc (was considering going Ivy/Z77) I am sort of at a loss on this issue.

I haven't tried a different driver yet but I am also not entirely sure it is a video card issue. Also, I will admit that these flashes look less like artifacts (sparkly lights, etc) and more like simple rendering flashes.

Is anyone experiencing coil/choke buzzing on their Gigabyte cards outside of benchmarks and game menus? I'm getting a rather faint but audible coil/choke whine on my Gigabyte card while playing Diablo III and it's starting to annoy me. I'll have to test tonight to see if it's happening in other games. I know GPU whine often comes with the territory, but if others aren't experiencing it I may consider a RMA or exchange.

Turn on adaptive v-sync - u are probably rendering too many FPS.
