Gigabyte GTX 670 OC Version *HANDS ON* - Page 70

Dunno what nvidia was thinking, but even being munchkin I cannot justify 3% (more like 1%) performance difference with the price. How are they going to sell 680s now? Only chance either optimize hell out of 680 and cripple 670 silently with drivers.
Or well... GeForce GTX685 anyone? ^_^

Sorry mate, I must have misread, spent 3 hours in traffic getting home from work, and am wrecked.. haha I was thinking in my head you meant higher clock were a sinch, but yeah 1200 is easy to get. Sorry for the confusion. redface.gif

When you play one of these games (some examples are: Mirrors Edge, Batman AA/AC, Mafia 2, and Alice:Madness Returns), the game can use your nV card to do the physX processing INSTEAD of the CPU. It typically enables much higher 'levels' of physics effects to be chosen in the game options, and then you see extra effects/more complex details in the game.
Now, you can run the physX either on your main rendering card, or on a 'dedicated' card, which is what the other poster was suggesting using your 9800GTX for. Obviously running a dedicated card allows the main card to focus on rendering, so in many cases you'll get higher FPS when running a dedicated physX card, but it depends somewhat on how demanding the game is to begin with.
Many people will say it's not worth it to 'buy' a card for physX and that's usually true, but if you have a suitable card laying around (and a 9800GTX is decent level of card to use for physX), it doesn't hurt to try it. But keep in mind that it ONLY does something when playing one of the games that supports hardware physX. And there's not that many of those.
Here's a pretty good demo video showing the difference in Mafia 2. Helps if you run 1080p and maximize the video. Keep your on eye on the 'shrapnel' effects and how long the chunks of wall that get blown off persist in the game world with PhysX on High. If you tried to run High PhysX on your CPU, that game would run at like 10fps ...

I've tested this in both Auto-select mode and dedicated to 9800 mode and in both situations, my physics score is poor compared to not having the 9800 plugged in at all.
Am I doing something wrong or is this card just too old compared to my i5-2500k / GTX 670 setup?

I was just wondering about that too..

Also for anyone looking to fit the EVGA gtx680 backplates to these Gigabyte windforce 670's, I have just tried to fit it, and you WON'T be able to use the supplied screws as they are a bigger thread size than what Giga. use. But, the stock screws are long enough to be used with the backplate.. I have attached an image to get a visual of what I mean. The yellow circles are the holes that can be used (ie with thread in the cooler) , and the arrow is pretty self explanitory. Basically with that spacer on the backplate it hits on the support brace on the top of the card, so it needs to be ground down so it can sit properly, otherwise it will have a fair amount of bow in the backplate. Hope this helps anyone looking to install the EVGA backplate. Also be very careful with the screws as the thread is very fine and could strip/crossthread very easily.

To be honest, I'm still slightly confused with overclocking boost stuff and such. GPU-Z reports boost should reach 1200 on the main screen.....but card is reported to reach a bit over 1300 by PrecisionX and GPU-Z's maximum. Anything else to run for fun?

And if you're wondering about fan noise....I can't hear the Gigabyte card at 63% (max fan speeds in those tests) over my H80's fans on low at idle...

GPU-z doesn't know how to tell you the cards boost clock as it's dynamic.
Having just said that it's dynamic, though, I haven't seen mine deviate from it's +220 clock setting.

It looks like yours is 182.5 boost. So when overclocking your base, expect the boost to add that.

With sli and the new dynamic clocking, are you able to set different clocks for each card? Or do they need to be the same clocks?

What about the possibility of flashing these cards with a GB 680 bios? That PCB looks identical to the 680
