SBS 2011 Issue? - Page 2

Also, the server has an 8MB VGA adaptor, with no upgrade potential, is that sufficient for running the SBS11 GUI? I'm also gonna try turning down the colours and kill the visual effects because as I said the lag is an issue throughout the OS.
If you have an open slot, put in another video card and try it out. Set up a maintenance window and run memtest as the last resort before reinstalling the OS, but my money is on Dell's install.

Drivers > Video card > memtest > reinstall OS

Drivers > Video card > memtest > reinstall OS

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately a graphics card won't be possible (due to lack of slots, internal thermal zone routing and power requirements).

This Sunday I will be: reinstalling drivers, running memtest, I'll try dialing down the UI settings (which SBS stupidly has) and system restoring to the earlist possible point.

PS: I don't think graphics are the issue, as it is still just as bad over RDP.

What Type of Warranty does the Server Have? Basic or ProSupport?

What version Broadcom Drivers and Firmware are you running?

Are you running Open Manager Server Administrator? If so, which version?

What Version iDRAC F/W, Bios, and PERC Drivers/FW are you running?

Does the Issue Occur in Safe Mode?

Has the Server Bluescreened?

Do you Run Symantec Endpoint Protection or Trend Micro on your Network?

FYI - The VGA Driver/Memory would not cause this. I work on Hundreds of Dell Servers a Week and have never seen an issue with GUI Settings and slow performance.

EDIT - Could you please PM Me a good email to Reach you at and the Service Tag for the System?

I'm no longer working on this job, the people were asking too much of me on too many fronts. We parted ways harmoniously though. So I can't test any new ideas.

I'm still interested in what was the cause of this issue though as I deal with a variety of Dell servers at work (though they run ESXi and are much higher end).

What Type of Warranty does the Server Have? Basic or ProSupport?
Basic

What version Broadcom Drivers and Firmware are you running?
Newest drivers from their website, firmware untouched. IMO Broadcom NIC's are ****, I wish it had Intel.

Are you running Open Manager Server Administrator? If so, which version?
No

What Version iDRAC F/W, Bios, and PERC Drivers/FW are you running?
No iDRAC installed, Didn't touch the BIOS, PERC H200 came with the newest Firmware pre-installed

Does the Issue Occur in Safe Mode?
Yes

Has the Server Bluescreened?
No

Do you Run Symantec Endpoint Protection or Trend Micro on your Network?
No

Agree with you about broadcom. Updating the Server and Specifically broadcom firmware would have most likely resolved your issue. Broadcom is known for this and many other windows flukes. Another thing could be IPV6 was incorrectly disabled on SBS. If neither of those fixed it, I would just do an in place upgrade and move on with my life if that fixed the issue.

Yeah, I'm not too worried though, got much bigger fish to fry :-)

Thanks though.

Out of interest what is your relationship with Dell?

PS: IPv6 was enabled.

On the topic of NIC's i built myself a home server a while ago and also had issues with the Broadcom chip-set.
I was using all the latest drivers but RDP performance was just terrible. There was a 20 second delay on anything i did in RD and streaming video ran at like 0.3 fps was not impressed. Fixed it immediately with a Intel based NIC i threw in though.

One thing for sure i will be looking for Intel based NIC's when buying them in the future !

This was a pre-built Dell system.

My issue was not that bad and it also came intermittently but I feel your pain.

I always use Intel NIC's in my machines :-)
