[BBC] Range of brain diseases could be treated by single drug

In a study, published in Nature, they prevented brain cells dying in mice with prion disease.

It is hoped the same method for preventing brain cell death could apply in other diseases.

In it's early stages, but a cure (or even just a treatment) for prion diseases would be very welcome, and if this works on other diseases like alzheimers it could save many lives. As people are living longer, it's things like this which are the next hurdle humanity must overcome. I'm glad to see we are making progress.

On one side, everytime I see medical advancements I worry about overpopulation.

On the other side, I really hate what Alzheimer's does to people, and don't wish it apon anyone.

My father has parkinsons disease, I really hope that maybe this could lead to helping treatment with that. It's a terrible disease, as are most brain diseases.

Yep, medical advances are a catch 22. Medicine is advancing far faster than the technologies needed to sustain the results of increased medical capacities. We really should have true civilian space stations by now or at least in the near future, but NASA is always the first government agency to get its budget cut and the private sector isn't consolidating to be enough of a force...

It's awesome that they're about to have a grasp on prion diseases, but it'd be better for everyone if we stop funneling most of our great minds into medicine.

They can come up with all of the pills that they wont to try to extend human life but I think the real future is in robotics and non biological or mixed biological "humans".

You can't just force people into a particular field. Some people are naturally better at some disciplines than others and it would be dumb to push people into fields they know nothing about or don't have the same learning potential.

I know this. It's what currently happens towards medicine for many, many people though. A above average doctor still gets paid comparably to a expert engineer, and it takes a lot shorter time period to get paid at that level in medicine.

Every time I see a medical advancement, I don't think about the overpopulation myth. I think about the corrupt and greedy not giving enough to these researchers.

Heck, whenever there's ANY scientific breakthrough, the greedy, corrupt and down right idiotic want to prevent it from happening. We could have cured cancers and many other types of diseases by now, but there's always someone standing in the way.
