Thanks man, I will be doing more of the theme work as the days go by now.

Currently working on the lid. I need to finish the latch and lift system before I paint the case. The plan is 4 gas shocks will lift the lid when a latch on each side is released. The CD/DVD drive and one empty (for now) 5.5 inch bay are welded to the bottom of the lid. this will allow use of the DVD tray from the front without having to stare at it all the time.

So I have to finish the fabrication of all that before I can cut the holes for the I/O and PSU since I will need room for the shocks in each corner.
I also am going to scrap the old Motherboard tray that I salvaged from that Dell. I re-measured and I do have room for a ATX board.

If I go that route then i could use the internals from my [Cool Blue] build for awile and save up for a i7/z77 combo.

On that note does anyone know where a good place to purchase a Motherboard tray is?

I was contemplating putting gas lift assist springs in my current build, but I was scared of the stress the case/latches would be under to hold them down. PLus I couldnt find gas springs that had the right closed and open dimensions. I hope you find a way to pull it off! thumb.gif

Yeah it wouldn't work in a normal case since the metal would warp. But this thing is a tank!

Found them!! Mcmaster-Carr has everything! 5 pounds force gas shocks.

After fruitlessly searching (thats a lie, I did eat a orange) for affordable low pressure gas lifts on Amazon and ebay and the general interwebs I went to the hardware store and invented my own system of making the lid pop open. Now I took Bill Owens advice from one of his early youtube videos and looked at Mcmaster Carr and if I didn't have a budget I would have gone with the ones they had. But at nearly 40 bucks plus shipping each they were just too much.

So like each modding session start with a clean work are...@%$ how did this happen?

7346168096_9e0a7a2d6a.jpg

My theory is a fat guy was piling junk on this table over the last week or so... Just a theory though.. XD

Ok, got some room made and spread all the parts out. Also Shoutout to Shadow_Foxx for selling the Rubber MNPCtech case feet to me. They look solid and should work great on this build. ( I'm going to have to breakdown and hit summit on the order I have had in the cart over there for a couple weeks)

7346189298_ebcf54ea23.jpg

Behind the scenes at the dentist.. JK I bought a new 5/16ths bit to drill the caps out.

7160974789_c9c1a9a52b.jpg

Poor mans bench vice.. I almost hurt myself with this. I was holding the first cap in my hand and when the bit punched thro it yanked it out of my grip. Lucky for me the edge and not the tip of the bit hit my hand. i drilled the rest with this old off brand channel-locks pliers

7161000593_9881c9d7f9.jpg

To me this looks like a tiny lego head with a feather in it

7346194064_6727027831.jpg

Put a washer in the bottom
7160993759_5072b2edac.jpg

And a 5/16ths by 3/4 bolt

7161005619_32231b05ef.jpg

The washers nest down in there real well, And yes I did stand at the washer bin picking ones out that fit just right.
7161009835_26fc4d76ba.jpg
Add a second washer and a wingnut and we are done with the lower end cap. (Add a washer and a wingnut? sounds like a Kitchen improvement plan at Buffalo Wild Wings)
7161017797_ddd69b23e5.jpg

Add a 6 inch by 5/16ths bolt to the other end. (good thing I didn't say that at a robot factory with the lights turned down low)

7161021567_fca7a08904.jpg

Cut a piece of the 1/2 inch PVC pipe to length and sanded the inside to remove burrs
7346239864_e6dece1a4e.jpg

Finally after all the bad robot jokes and what not heres a couple pictures of what this is shaping up to be.
On the table...
7161033667_c142ba07f0.jpg
Compressed...
7346245512_b4348a66e6.jpg
Extended... (I didn't go there...)
7161039097_8a7ea6027e.jpg
Haha, It works... I love it when a crazy plan comes together. I also love it when I don't have to spend the grocery money on Gas Shocks... Its just right. Enough room for the DVD drive to pop out from the underside of the lid.

7161042287_8ddbd54154.jpg

I will never be able to carry these on a plane.
7346436364_6b32b0bdc0.jpg

After this I sanded down the caps and pipe. Tomorrow I will buy some plastic flat black paint. I also have to trade two of the springs in for slightly slimmer ones. I guess they vary from box to box. Two of them wouldn't slide in the pipe real well. My next thing is to take the case to work and tack weld the 5/16ths nuts to the lid in the right spots for the lifts. I also need to work out the latching.

Questions are welcome. Anyone have any good ideas on a latch? I'm thinking a brass trunk latch on each side right now.

Cheers, Alder

Ok, I got some more done on the case today.

Here is a pic of the bottom of the case, Note its lack of feet.

7164167575_2206a61c34.jpg

I lined up the feet on the bottom of the case, at first I was thinking I would use the holes for the old feet. However the MNPCtech Rubber case feet are larger then the old ones and wouldn't fit. So I marked the spot and drilled 4 holes for them.

7349376168_daedd9c177.jpg

Looks good on there.

7349386900_5a4dc5346d.jpg

Zoomed out shot.

7349392876_b9a3ec7089.jpg

I also mounted the shocks in the case part way. Enough to do a better test any way.

Down:

and Up:
7349398406_b7ec8a954d.jpg

Progress will be faster now... I hope to have this done by mid-summer as there is a couple more smaller mods I want to finish and or Redo. And once Guildwars2 comes out I will be playing that more.
I'll be taking the case in to get the nuts and washers welded to the lid on Saturday or Sunday. I'm going to mount the Motherboard tray and cut out the I/O and PCE holes in the next few days as well.

Thanks, For looking and as always questions are welcome.

Have you thought about under lighting the case? A dimmed (~2.5v/LED) orange/red/orange (maybe a few random purples to get more of a brown) led configuration could give an awesome and (imo) classy look.
