The Concept

Futuristic Steampunk This is what would happen if a UFO crashed into a alternate steampunk universe. And the locals turned its black box into a PC.
So what is Project [Black Box] all about? Its about non standard and unusual,I realized after my last mod that anyone could build it and although its wicked cool I want something much more.

The Plan

Find a oddball metal cabinet and stuff fairly high end parts in it.

All wires will be paracord sleeved in a black and green color mix

All parts will be found on a budget watching newegg sales and ebay as well as local hardware and thrift stores.

Edit: Budget seems to be growing

Black and green are the colors for the project. EDIT: Also a small amount of Brass or Bronze.

The only standard PC case parts to be used are the MoBo tray and I/O shield. The rest will be fabricated at my work or here at the house.

All parts will have some sort of a mod done to them.

The Parts

So far I have:

The "case": 1900's Stewart Warner Series 900 Radio housing (Ebay $18.20 with shipping)

The CPU 2500K


The MB ASRock Pro3 Gen3


The Ram Gskills DDR3 1600 4x4 GB


The HD 500 Seagate F3

The GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 6870


The PSU: Rosewill Hive 650 Modular (with newegg coupon $63)


The CD/DVD Drive: LG CD/DVD OEM($15 newegg coupon)


The Paracord: 2 rolls of 550lbs (1 green, 1 black $16 bucks at local Military Surplus store)


The Fans: Two 80mm green led Thermaltake Thunderblades and two 120mm green led Thermaltake Thunderblades (paid about $6 bucks each from Newegg and Bestbytes)

The Old Cases: Going to cut up a couple old cases for the metal and Mobo tray and I/O sheild. (Free)

The idea is to have the inside of the case VERY bright.

Ok, I made a mess. I decided to try some paint stripper and rust remover before I go as far as sandblasting. I now have it soaking. If anyone else is thinking about using paint stripper my advice is use gloves and do just 1 side at a time and do it outside.

After letting it soak for 10-15 minutes I attacked it with Chuck Norris' Toothbrush (heavy duty grout brush)

85 years of grimy paint dissolving off the side. Somewhere a antique dealer is crying in pain.

I got 99.9% of the paint off, But now there is still the rust to deal with... I'm back on the sandblasting train.

Ok, So I removed the 85 y/o case feet. And the bottom of this thing is now removable!!

I'm still amazed at the quality of Steel used in a RADIO back in the 20's....Look its as thick as a cross-cut circle saw blade!!! I'm fairly convinced that this thing could survive a "weather balloon" crash into the New Mexico desert just fine.

As is standard I got side tracked. Wile in the storage room looking for all my sleeving stuff I found 2 or 3 of the old cases I'm planing to use on this build for parts. I selected a unwilling victim,
It seems Dell over builds these 2001 era PC's a bit. This is a old Socket 478 P4 with a 160 GB HD and about 10 pounds of plastic cladding.

After I pried the side open I found a mess.

I had to deploy a side cutters and a hand held socket driver to remove the Matx MoBo

Whats this??? Jackpot.. A removable Motherboard tray with green latches? Yes it is.

I will have to cut off the socket 478 mounting points and make a CPU cooler bracket access hole to this tray as well. (unless I liked the smell of shorted out components anyway!!!)

I also found a tool-less DVD drive bay cage

And a matching HDD bay. I should be able to cut them down and mount them in the new case just fine. This will be cut down to fit.

EDIT: went ahead and cut down the base from the case to make the removable tray.

Ok, now that I am covered in metal dust and the bodies (and quite possibly Souls!!) of a large number of dead spiders, I'm ready for a shower and a break.

I think its time for a new made up phase. "Its now time to Para-crastinate " (thats cronic avoidance of sleeving with paracord due to lazyness)

I'll have a update tonight. I got the bottom of the case sanded and primed. Also tested the PSU for 24 hours in my [Orange Box] rig. I will began the PSU sleeving tonight. I will also be posting all those pics. thanks, and bring on those comments and questions.
