Hello forums,

So recently my friend came and ask me whether he should get an smartphone or a "gaming" laptop. He came to me because he had the exact same conflict I had a few weeks ago, except he's in high school.

He currently owns a basic phone and he has a desktop at home. (And it's pretty good too..)
Do you think a laptop might be suitable for a high school student? (I mean, he could type his papers at home on the desktop.. but then I don't see what he can do with a smartphone as a student.)

He's interested in a laptop because he wants to have mobile computing *on-the-go*, and he can play games.. I guess..everywhere? He's interested in a smartphone like the iPhone because well.. he likes the fact that you could have everything on a phone, (tons of apps, web browsing..etc.) and maybe it's aesthetics. I had the same problem but I ended up getting a laptop because I need it for note-taking in class, etc.. But he's in high school..and as far as I could remember.. we used textbooks and weren't allowed to use electronic devices in class.

What would you recommend him to get?

A smartphone like the iPhone or Andriod for app usage and everything minimized on a phone?

or

A Laptop that could probably benefit him for school..and on the go gaming?

Personally I don't know what to recommend him..haha.

If you think smartphone is the better choice, suggestions would be nice.
If you think a gaming laptop is better, do you think he should buy a laptop that's capable of low-medium settings on a high end games even though he has a desktop at home.. or go cheaper?

Thanks! thumb.gif

I would say go for the smartphone, but not an iPhone at all costs. A high end Android would allow him to do stuff faster with 4g and allow him to tether onto a laptop if he ever got one. I find myself using my galaxy note a lot note than my Samsung focus because it is faster and can tether.

Gaming laptop is good, but when in the go it's a hassle to move and you won't have internet to game on most of the time.

I would skip the laptop and pick up a smartphone of preference for sure, whether it be Android, iOS or WinMo. Maybe it is just me and the people I became friends with, but we all considered the laptop route for college with the same reasons in mind. After the first two weeks, pretty much everyone who bought a laptop stopped bring it it around to classes for one reason or another. Assuming you don't mind lugging it around, the battery life is short so you will always be at the mercy of finding a plug. Then there's the problem of wifi availability, whether your school blocks access to certain places like FB or Youtube. It sounds awesome to have gaming on the go, but the reality of it is that it is very expensive and impractical to bring about a decent "gaming" laptop.

Does your friend realistically have opportunities to use the laptop productively or does he just want a source of distraction during a particularly boring lecture? smile.gif

If he is content with his current phone, why not consider a tablet like the Transformer Prime? It is lightweight and the form factor is slim enough that it won't take up a huge amount of bag space. The potential to be distracted is still there, as is the potential for productivity. Battery life can be extended if he purchases the dock/keyboard. No flash though biggrin.gif

I'd go for smart phone. It's really a "must" these days.

How about a slate instead of a smartphone? If he's already got a cell, that'll do for calls and the slate can handle the apps, web browsing, gaming, etc. (I guess they let students use WiFi at their school?)

Well here's the problem, he doesn't know if it would be a waste for him to get the iPhone (or any other smartphone.) just to talk/text with friends while having the oppourtunity to play apps or use apps for little things. (all that for $250 for phone + tax, and a blistering $30/month for 2 years.)
and as for the laptop, I think he just wants it so he can go to friends house and play for the main purpose. Nice suggestion on the tablet! Though I do not know if he is interested, (as he did not inform me about it.)

Haha I know right? It seems like everybody wants it.. but it looks apparent that he's debating if the $30/month is actually worth it...

So do you guys really think a smartphone would be useful for him despite the heavy data plan?

That's what I had in mind at some point.. since a tablet is basically like a smartphone but without calling and txting (Where the basic phone comes in).
(Don't flame if I am incorrect.. haha)

Yeah.. It's the "trend" that's been going on..but I'm looking for information or opinions whether it's actually worth the $250 (phone+tax) + $720 (2 year data). or just getting a pretty high end laptop with that money.. which would provide more to a high school student?
