Thread Starter
I have an Phenom II x4 965 OC to 4.2ghz (Will be 24/ stable with my new mobo, which supports AM3+ as well)

I was looking into the FX's, when they first arrived they were raved to be the Intel Killer, but i knew that honestly, AMD is a budget company, they make very good CPU's for the avarage joe. Not the guy who spends 400 bucks on a processor, and I love that about AMD. When they got into testing, everybody hated them, said they were below par, but like a new gfx card, some patches and drivers will come out which will stabalize preformance, but i knew it would never touch some i5's and the i7's. (HUGE price difference for a reason).

Anyways, here is my question, to all AMD FX 8XXX owners:

Compared to the profomance of a phenom II, how does a FX 8 core handle in day to day tasks, and in gaming? (CPU intensive gaming as well like Crysis Wars, Battlefield 3 and Bc2, and GTA 4).

How far can this overclock with safe temps/ voltage? What are those limits? (I have a Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler)

Would I be able to achieve a consistant 4.5ghz OC on it?

And What is your imput regarding the new FX Processors? Should I wait for the next revision of Bulldozer? Like the Phenom's C1, c2, and c3?

I know its a lot of questions but non e of these has been answered by any forum i have look up or and benchmarking reviews i looked at.

The investment in a board and CPU for gaming would not net a significant increase with regards to the amount invested.

You have an A770e3 listed, what is your new board?

I can't speak for a Phenom II because I never had one. I come from the Intel clan. But, it handles day to day tasks quite fine in my opinion. Word processing, web browsing, etc. Running virtual machines while handling day to day tasks works well too at least for me.

BF3 plays very well on my FX-8150 at stock and of course at 4.6Ghz.100% of time when playing BF3, I have 1 or 2 cores sitting at anywhere from 55-70% usage, while the rest sit at 30%-45%. I've never experienced any lag from it. It handles the other games you mentioned with with ease. Hands down. So overall I think it works well.

I'd say on a really good air cooler 4.4 to 4.6ghz with +.100 to +.125 (I think, I don't remember) for voltage. The core temp limit is 61c. With my H80 on the lowest setting I hit 57c with Prime95 load and 48c on the max performance setting. Since I do have my H80 on the lowest setting and OC'd to 4.6Ghz, when playing Battlefield my CPU sits at 43-51c. On the highest H80 performance setting it's even lower.

I'd probably wait it out. It's released "hopefully" next quarter. It's not too long off. But it really depends on how bad you need it and if you'll get serious gains over your Phenom. That I can't answer for you. Sorry if I was no help to you but I wanted to give some input. thumb.gif

I agree. I'm currently waiting on PD as well, only because I bought an AM3+ board in anticipation of bulldozer. If you don't mind buying a new motherboard/processor for better performance, go for it. It's not that much of a hassle to switch over to Intel. Me, I'm just too lazy and broke to make the switch... so I'll be staying with AMD. If PD ends up being a flop I'll just grab a 1100t or something and rock that for the next 2 or 3 years.

i think bulldozer was a test run,i also think piledriver will be about 10% better than phenom II,and not much more than that, its all about marketing strategy,i,m 47 years old and over the years i see them giving us a little tease of technology every year, may it be tv,s or stereos,or computers,we the consumer will only get the technology they want to give us

I Went from FX-6200 to step down to the phenom II X6 1100t to dissprove peoples questions RE performance... and I was sorely dissappointed.

first hand testing proved to me that it simply wasn't as good. It's just a bunch of die hards refusing to give in...

Yes, I have now gone full swing to intel Again, however I simply couldnt fault any of the bulldozer chips during the time i owned them...

in order of performance from the testing that I did .( FX-4100, FX-6100, Phenom II X6 100t, FX-6200 and then the FX-8150) YES I owned all, I was testing my way up through the ranges.

personally I think you have more to gain from upgrading from your 965..than most would from a 1090 or a 1100...

Sadly now I'm running an i7-3820 which performs at stock the Same as my FX-8150 did at 5gig over clock. (3D Studio Max rendering speed test, Cine Bench and 3d Mark tests.)

....I'd say wait for piledriver... but it took amd Years to get Bulldozer out.. is it worth wait ? probably not.

Answer to the OP question from my personal findings is that the bulldozers are all a step up from what you have, but is it a signicant enough leap...
A BD would be an upgrade but will be a small one and may not be worth a new board and proc. That's the catch right there. If you're wanting a new board and are gonna have to reinstall your OS again, you might as well go Ivy Bridge. They are the fastest things on the market right now but then you're talking more money as the 3570's are around $250 unless you live near a Microcenter.

Bottom line I guess would be Ivy Bridge for max performance or wait a little bit til we know a little more about Piledriver since we're this close to it.
