Keep the Phenom. Like you I sat on the fence on whether or not to upgrade. I may go to a 980 from my 955 but we'll see

a 955 to a 980 is not a decent enough upgrade IMO. If anything 960T because Thubans are better tongue.gif If you do not like how your 955 performs when overclocked, you should be looking into intel.

I tend to agree. I believe the Thubans are a little better running CPU than Deneb. Cant give you any real reasons or facts as to why that would be but they just seem to overclock higher and easier and run a little cooler. I dont think theyre any faster in terms of IPC but they have a lot more potential to be tweaked into performing a lot better.

Thubans have a better memory controller than the Denebs.

Can't speak for the 8 cores, but the FX-4170 I'm running at the moment is noticeably faster in compression and gaming than my Phenom II x3 720 was.

FX-4170 is at 4.8Ghz (Hopefully going to hit 5 stable soon, can boot into Windows but P95 fails) and Phenom II x3 720 was at 3.6Ghz.

See, this is the fact that has fallen of deaf ears that BD can overclock higher and easier than PII. I have been able to get my 8120 up to 4.5 on air with ease, and I normally run it with a 3.4 base clock and a 4.2 turbo, with no issues. I could barely get 3.9 on my 1090T, and if it did boot it acted weird.

I was looking into the FX's, when they first arrived they were raved to be the Intel Killer, but i knew that honestly, AMD is a budget company, they make very good CPU's for the avarage joe. Not the guy who spends 400 bucks on a processor, and I love that about AMD. When they got into testing, everybody hated them, said they were below par, but like a new gfx card, some patches and drivers will come out which will stabalize preformance, but i knew it would never touch some i5's and the i7's. (HUGE price difference for a reason).
Anyways, here is my question, to all AMD FX 8XXX owners:
Compared to the profomance of a phenom II, how does a FX 8 core handle in day to day tasks, and in gaming? (CPU intensive gaming as well like Crysis Wars, Battlefield 3 and Bc2, and GTA 4).
How far can this overclock with safe temps/ voltage? What are those limits? (I have a Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler)
Would I be able to achieve a consistant 4.5ghz OC on it?
And What is your imput regarding the new FX Processors? Should I wait for the next revision of Bulldozer? Like the Phenom's C1, c2, and c3?
I know its a lot of questions but non e of these has been answered by any forum i have look up or and benchmarking reviews i looked at.
Thank You!thumb.gif

1. Day to day tasks, much smoother. Gaming? Stick with yourr 965.
2. I can OC to 4.6 with minor adjustments. This speaks more to the CHV than to my abilities. However, if you click on my sig rig, you will see that 5.0 (on a cold day with the windows open!) doesn't even require a FSB adjustment. Just 1.45v in Extreme LLC. 61c max sustained for the cores, 72c sustained for the die temp.
3. A fifth grader can maintain an OC of 4.5 on an 8150. And I'm a college professor!
4. Waiting for the next best thing depends on your personality! Oh, and your budget.biggrin.gif
5. I switched from an M4N98TD EVO with a 1090T to my CHV and 8150. I know the feeling. If the new line of CPU's are worth the money and can fit into my AM3+ socket (I'm NOT giving up my CHV!!!), I'll save until I can afford it. I'd rather upgrade my cooling system first, but that has nothing to do with the price of eggs in Walmart. I'd also like a couple of GTX 580's! Get the point?

Have fun on your parapatetic travels through the21st century path of computer technology. I hope you can run fast!!!

My FX-6100 is decent. I think the real performance comes from overclocking these things a tiny bit, which can be done on stock voltages up to 4Ghz. I mean to overclock to 4Ghz straight out the box without any real difficulty is pretty good I think.

Besides, the FX is low in power consumption, fun to overclock and I can notice the difference in speeds biggrin.gif FXs are cheap.

Does it "feel smoother" or are you actually getting better FPS? xD
Are both chips overclocked?
