Good stuff. I'd put money on it being a Trinity Macbook Air; that would easily cut down close to $200 in cost on the CPU ( typical Intel ULV's are in the $3-400 range).

I'm sure you'll still be paying a premium for the hardware specs you get, but not a bad idea for Apple.

Am I the only one seeing something wrong with this? You don't see Gucci lowering their prices just to compete, these companies understand they are a premium brand, people will find you. Jobs will be rollin in his grave. First it was the commercials for the new ipad...they showed capabilities instead of creating a want, a desire like the old ipod commercials with the color background, people dancing and at the very end, the name of the product.

Apple is supposed to be a premium brand, offering something even slightly lower will damage your brand name. Imagine if the mass majority of university students had 799 mac book airs. All of a sudden, they don't seem so special do they. Just another semi cheap notebook.

We on this forum are different, most have no sense of brand loyalty, we go with the best at the current time however that is not how the world works. Steve worked hard to make sure the company had an image before any products were sold. I mean, remember the old MP3/MP4 days when you would go to bestbuy and see a section for MP3/MP4 players, then you get the iPods. Steve could have done commercials back then to show off the capabilities of the ipod, but he didn't. That is what everyone else does, "ooo look at this, now YOU must have it because look how easy this is now!!!!"

I understand their trying to sell units, but they must preserve what Steve has worked so hard for. This is basically apple saying they are scared, they need to attract as much people as possible. It is a complete 180 on the apple philosophy. I wonder how many more years apple can go like this.

People don't line up for weeks for a new feature or two. People line up for weeks for the image such a device brings. Clean, successful, fun, with the times. These days the electronic industry is merging with the fashion industry. You don't buy a piece of clothing because you LOVE the way it looks, or feels. No, you buy it because you think it will look good on you in someone else's eyes. Those who say otherwise, well there are always 40 year old virgins. Unless you are so wealthy you can have your own look....

By doing this I think Apple is showing some fear of ultrabooks... Aesthetically speaking, Apply is not solely king of the hill anymore and that's something they had going for them for a loooong time.

The price is still a premium when you consider what will it will be spec wise. If just going on pure gut based on the current line, I would say a sandy bridge cpu (leftovers) with a 64gb ssd. They will and maintain the profit margin, but at the same time enticing buyers who were on the fence to move to the Apple ecosystem. I don't see much of a loss for them only gains honestly.

Also, have you been on a college campus in the last few years? I would say at least 50%+ of the students are carrying around a macbook pro/air. At least the three I have been on.

I go to wilfrid laurier university in ontario canada. I can tell you that in my lectures the average is probably around 80%. There are the odd acer, samsung, asus. 799 is no longer a premium for a computer that as far as the public is concerned is fast enough. The majority of people do not care about specs. They will pretend to understand it, but really they have no idea. I have friends STILL on the old mac books. The battery doesn't last even 20 minutes but she insists that it is perfect for her.
