GPU for AMD Build

Thread Starter
I started another thread earlier regarding a friend building a PC.

Instead he bought a prebuilt alongside a 23" monitor.

http://shop.amd.com/us/All/Detail/Desktop/FR541SLC

I told him to return it, yet he's one of those that are very stubborn.

The main issues I see are the Black Edition FX-6100 and the obviously the video card ( + PSU)

So here are some things I am dealing with him. What video card will pair with the CPU? He will be playing on a 23" monitor, 1080P, so will the CPU at that resolution be a bottleneck?

I am pretty much positive replacing the PSU, which he is going to have to do I am sure, will completely void his warranty. If he doesn't care about that then he can proceed, but unfortunately after he gets a decent video card and power supply he is going to be so deep into that system money wise, it is almost hilarious.

Video card, I would say something along the lines of the 7850 or a GTX 560 Ti 448 Core, leaning slightly towards the GTX 560 Ti 448. Then he will want to grab a decent 600W power supply.

Going with the two above will give him a decent gaming system, but feel free to let him know for the money he could have built, or had someone build, a far superior system. Maybe that will convince him to return the computer and do a build. If someone just wants a $300 or $400 internet machine, buying is a viable way of going as it is hard to build a complete system for around $400 like Dell will sell. But when it comes to a higher end machine for gaming and such it is far better to build.

They also do not specify if that hard drive is 7200RPM that will hinder the system if it's a green drive (5400RPM)

the problem is thre's no specifics in the description it could be an okay build it could be and pile of crap.

You'll have to somehow get all the part details from him then you'll know what needs replacing.

or just forget it and let your friend game on their beasty FX 6100 and invidia 520 biggrin.gif

From what I have seen iBuy uses, like any other manufacturer, the most basic of basic and minimal required in terms of parts.

Thanks for the input.

So I shouldn't be looking at a GTX 570 or 580 then?

Well it just depends on cost he wants to put out really, he is already going to be hooptystomped in terms of value, so it almost doesn't matter at this point. Truthfully his system isn't going to bottleneck with a GTX 580 and gaming, it would work fine if he wants to spend the money. But he is looking at video card + power supply to run it and the system. He also needs to identify his HDD, as Casey said they aren't specifying the drive, and it very well could be a 5400rpm. If it is that is going to gimp his system performance.

Well I'll be sure to let him know.

Its things like these that pisses me off about dumb buyers that blindingly dive into the PC gaming market.

Thanks again
