AP-15's VS AP-29's

Hey guys,

I need a new fan for my GPU radiator and i cant make my mind up between the Gentle Typhoon AP-15 1850RPM and Gentle Typhoon AP-29 3000RPM.

I have 2 x AP-15's on my H100 and they are brilliant fans, i love how much air they push and how quiet they are. I'd like to keep my GPU temps as low as possible and as i need to buy a new fan i have been looking at the AP-29...If this fan can perform better than the AP-15 even at say 2000RPM and still stay fairly quiet id rather spend a few extra quid.

Does anyone own a AP-29 fan? If so, how loud are they compared to the AP-15's? Ive seen a video but even the AP-15's sound louder in the video than they do in real life once in a case so im looking for someone with first hand experience to give advice. I know the AP-29 is molex so id need a convertor for my controller but im happy to buy that if its worth getting.

Cheers

Thats the video i was refering to in my OP mate. It sounds fairly noisy but so does the AP-15 whereas once its fitted in real life its really quiet.

The two fans scale almost identical, though the AP-15 is slightly quieter at lower RPM's. If I read the rest correctly its saying... there is little benefit in performance between a AP-15 running at 1850 RPM vs a AP-29 at the same speed. If you are basing your buying decision from this, then get another AP-15. If noise isn't a problem, go for the AP-29, which performs better at higher RPM's.

The AP-29s are exceptionally good at 1800-3000RPM, but the AP-15s are still king of 1000-1800RPM levels.

what about say 2000RPM which the AP-15 cant do? Would it be much louder than the AP-15 at 100%? I always run my AP-15's at full speed, they are practically silent.

My way of thinking is if the AP-29 is the same noise level as the AP-15 at 1850RPM but can go HIGHER when needed (eg in the summer etc) then i might be better off with the AP-29 as i can crank it up if need be? If i could run the AP-29 at say 2000RPM and its only slightly louder than a AP-15 at 100% then im a winner.

I have the AP-29s on my 360 rad, and I put AP-15s on my friends H60 rad. When I undervolt my AP-29s, they are nearly as quiet as the AP-15s (maybe a dB or two louder). What I really like about them though, is when it is hot in my computer room, which happens often in the summer, I can just turn the fans up to max. At 3k rpm they are ~50 dB from 4 feet away (measured with my android). So I just put my closed ear headphones on and listen or music and I can't hear them at all.

The AP-29s are still very quiet at ~2200 RPM. The noise starts going up around 2500 RPM for me.

Again, looking at Martin's charts the two fans scale almost identically up to 1850RPM. Since you already run your AP-15's full out and are used to the noise, you may not even notice it.

It all depends on what you consider "much louder". For me, anything over 28dBa is too loud biggrin.gif

You would have to either buy it from FrozenCPU and pay the $4 per fan, or splice / solder new wires for a 3pin fan. I have mine connected to a Lamptron FCv2 fan controller.

As far as sound, at 3k rpm, they make a high pitched humming sound. Not so high as to be whining IMO tho. Go to the link that gymenii posted earlier, the sound is very accurate to what I hear from my fans.

i had two ap-29s for 3 days and sold them immediately afterwards. i really want a quiet rig so i was using the ap-29 at 7v. anything above 7v is too much for me to handle *i dont use headphones*. performance wise, i did not see any difference in temps using ap-15s and ap-29 at 7v.

i think you're fine with the ap-15 specially if you are using the antec kuhler in your sig. i dont think you'd gain any significant benefit by running anything higher or louder.
