What graphics card for gaming/Eye infinity setup?

Thread Starter
I currently have 1 ATI Radeon HD 5700.

I want to setup a 3x monitor eyeinfinity gaming setup (23").

Games I would like to play: Assassins Creed, Skyrim, League of Legends, Guild Wars 2

My question is would getting another 5700 do the job (in crossfire), or do I have to upgrade even to a stronger card?

I would like to keep it at ~$500 if I have to upgrade to 2 graphics cards.

Either a couple of used 6950's or a single 7950/7970

2x 5700 series GPU won't be any good unless you use 3x 1024x768 monitors..

I have even read reviews where people struggled with a single 79xx on 3 displays and required a second. How accurate those are I am not sure, but there has been a lot of talk about XFire with 79xx for 3 display setups. At least at the highest of high settings for games.

I can play most if not all games at high or ultra with a single 7970 @ 6040x1080, A second one simply smoothens the experience out and allows absolute maximum

Good to know! I am glad you came in with a realistic statement and not the typical "I can run every game on PHOTO REALISM EXTREME!! with 1 on 5 displays!". I tend to see that sort of crazy statement a lot from people. biggrin.gif

Who wouldn't be happy with high settings at that resolution on just one card?

I'd also recommend going for a second card. I'm an Nvidia guy, but with games like Crysis 2 (DX11 and high res texture pack) and the Witcher 2 at maxed setting really give my system a run for its money at 5760x1080. It's too bad that the Witcher update stopped me from being able to run the game in surround though frown.gif. Go with a 7970 and possibly upgrade to another in the future! Happy gaming!

Can I still output to 3 displays with 1x 7970? I thought you had to have atleast 2 cards to output to more than 2 monitors?

Can I crossfire my 7970 and 5700 together?

Edit: I also found the powercolor 7970 @ slickdeals for $429 after MIR here:
http://us.ncix.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031501&sku=70111&vpn=AX7970+3GBD5-2DHV3&manufacture=PowerColor&promoid=1058

Is this the one I am looking for? I am planning to water cool my PC soon, so I am not to concerned about the cooling they have on the cards

You can't crossfire those two cards, they aren't of the same family. I believe you can run 3 displays on the 1 card with the right finagling.
