Last time I checked, yes you do.

For eyefinity, all 3 monitors have to be connected to the same card. Unless you have a monitor with a DP port, you need an active adapter to hook up the third monitor.

Gents - I want to use a 7970 to run three monitors (~6000x1200) for FS X and BF 3. On near max settings, will I be able to get 50 FPS in BF3? If not, what's the best two card combo that will give me that number. I want to use a microATX case so I'm really hoping for 1 card. Thanks for the help.

NO.

Hmm, probably two of the coolest running cards, something with fancy fans, windforce/lightning,sapph oc, etc.

If you want one card, and want it now, get a 690.

Out of all the available single cards, if the 690 can't do it then no card can. Although memory might be an issue.

Yes mate! Only way out is buying monitor with display port input but that will be very expensive!
Adapter I bought (mentioned previosly) works great! but problem is that I have choosen wrong monitors!
My idea was 24'' widescreen in middle and 19'' standart on sides becouse height for these screens is ~30cm so should be perfect BUT as 1 is widescreen 1920x1080 and 2 are 1280x1024 eyefinity stretch image on 24'' and games are not playable.... Than I though putting both 19'' screens in portrait to get 1080 on them vertically but eyefinity doesn't support mixed orientations.... mad.gif So I'm getting rid of my both dell ultrasharp 1905 FP on ebay mad.gif planning to get 3x24'' in portrait... I suggest same resolution screens for eyefinity....

Depends on what you mean by "near max settings". In my opinion (which is just an opinion as I dont own BF3 nor 7970, so based on benchmarks) it is possible if you are smart with your settings. A 7970 is quite powerful card. Usually, in the benches, it seems to me that the main thing killing the frame-rate off is overdoing the AA while in reality - unless you are sitting 15 cm from your display something like 2x AA is enough or if you are sitting ~75 cm then 0xAA looks as good as any higher number (assuming 20/20 vision, 1920x1080 23'' display).

If you dial just straight into "ultra" then probably no, if you apply some brains and do settings by hand then probably yes.

While display-port displays are not quite as cheap as same size cheapest TN screens I would not say "very expensive". One of the cheapest from top of my head is DELL UltraSharp 23'' costing approx 175 euros (in Estonia, that is with 20% VAT) while the cheapest similar resolution screens can be had for roughly 120 euros around here. However, this DELL is awesome value as it has a 5 year UltraSharp warranty, zero bright pixel policy (regular ISO standard allows you up to 5 bright defective pixels on those cheap screens), Displayport and very good stand with good range of adjustments and pivot (so you can switch to portrait if desired), and it is e-IPS screen meaning 178/178 viewing angles so that thing would actually work in portrait, unlike the cheaper TN ones where you will get headic from contrast shifts by slightest head movements in portrait.

After doing some research I ran across the 7950, what is the key differences between 7950 vs 7970?

It seems that 7950 is about the same as a 7970 and has the required dongles I need for eyeinfity setup:

Can anyone let me know how well this will perform @ 1080p on 3 monitors?

Coming from experience, don't get two 6950s for a three screen setup. It's such a huge headache. I sold one of my 6950s and have been gaming on just one screen for the time being.

I didn't need an active display port adapter for my three screen setup either. One of my cards was the sapphire flex. That's something to look into if you don't want a dongle.
