Pile Driver may be AMD's last lifeline, if they dont succeed with Pile Driver Intel will be too far ahead and AMD may be out of the CPU buisness(not APU) =(.

I think it will put them back in the game, but it won't catch them up. They'll need a radical improvement in the architecture for that. There's no way AMD can catch up to the really high-end Intel stuff using the K11 architecture.

Intel stole a march on them with Sandy Bridge. It was so much better than Nehalem that it completely pushed them out of the upper mid-range and high-end part of the market. But if Piledriver really is 10-15 percent better on IPC, with a lower TDP, then they can get the clock speeds high enough to at least be competitive. They're not going to come close to matching Intel clock-for-clock, but that's not important. If they can churn out a 4.5 GHz Piledriver that can hang with a 3770K at the same price point or a little less, they'll be fine.
