I don't have enough money to move up to a 7870 or higher, so I was going to get another 6870 to crossfire. Will this configuration work with a phenom 980 be at stock (3.9ghZ)? The crossfire setup would be in a x16/x16 configuration.

Go for it, I'm pretty sure a Phenom II @ 3.9 Ghz won't bottleneck your cards at all.
Now keep in mind, you'll only be limited to 1 GB of Vram so you still wont be able to max out games like BF3 that require more than 1GB Vram.
