World is bigger than US though - the US part might become kinda non-functional, but several countries already have their own root name servers and they can "fragment" the net by declaring themselves the "root". There was some years ago some drama over the root servers and US were not willing to let go of these for "security reasons" (i.e., ability to monitor net traffic), however, as far as I'm aware China, EU and Iran at the very least have their own "root" servers for the internet which can be used to just cut off the US "root" servers in the case of "emergency" - whatever they mean with the "emergency".
So - if the asteroid nukes the net root servers (located in the US) then the internet in these countries would function on just fine - only problem might be if they would try to access any page that's physically located within the US.
