Raid cards do they come on Motherboards?

Thread Starter
Thinking about buying a few SSD Drives for mass storage. Do I need a raid card? I am planning on upgrading to an ivy bridge next month. Waiting for a combo cpu ivy bridge/ mobo i7 deal. Can just get a MB with a raid card on it? I found out raid 0 is on their the limit of ssd prolly depends on the mb right? And speed is same as a raid controller?

Not all motherboards have the raid option.

When buying one, check the technical info to see if its there and it should tell you.

If you are part of the Intel world you will always have some on-board RAID functionality with compatibility that will span across their entire product line.

Most sandy / ivy boards have raid now. You can check in the technical specifications though.

I know the Asrock Extreme11 comes with an onboard LSI chip.

Looks like a really nice board but I probably don't need all that.

If that's the case I would do what Ramicio suggest. Just use an Intel board since most of the high-end boards support the same types of Raid. If anything happens to the array you can rebuild it easily. I have a Raid 0 and Raid 1 array running on my board and the performance is AMAZING on the SSDs.
