Need advice on degree, BA or BS?

Thread Starter
Ok well I am coming up to a turning point in my junior year where I can either choose to go Computer Engineering BS, or a Computer Science BA or BS.

Which degree would you guys suggest? I love programming I want to program for a living. I also enjoy networking and wouldn't mind being involved in that.

My school also offers a MS of Computer Science and dad offered to pay for my MS also, is a MS in this field even a benefit?

Thank you

I was going to go into computer science until i learned about the fact that there is a possibility that the company you work for might ditch you in a few years for new graduates who not only will work for less but be better educated because of how fast the technology is advancing. (not saying ti will happen just that there is a possibly). I personally ended up changing to electrical engineering which is close to a computer engineer. (can get some of the same jobs at intel.)

I have respect for any engineer.. The amount of math you must go through as a engineer.. I only went through statistics and calculus. My major is accounting. What university you plan on going to? UCR? I go to UC Irvine

i'm in comp. engineering, and you study a lot more than just programming. it's more of a mix of CS and EE. if you mostly want to program, i suggest B.S. in Computer Science.

also, at a lot of companies, base salary starts 2-3 "levels" higher for MS vs. BS.

Go for a Bachelor's in CS if you want to be in programming. You'll come to find that it's the nerdiest possible group of people, but it's the best degree for what you want.

As far as getting a Masters is concerned, I'd avoid it. Anything past a Bachelor's Degree is unnecessary as once you have that, all that matters is your certifications. Get your CS degree, then focus on the obvious A+, Security+, and Network+ if you don't have them already.

You get a degree to get into the field. You get certifications to move up in the field.

Get a B.S. always. You will be preferred over the B.A.s and will get paid more usually. I am a senior in BS Electrical Engineering. Computer Science if you really love programming. Software Engineering if your school has it will also be a good option. Computer Engineering combines the hardware and software but gets more into chip design than actually programming. CE will use the software to make databases and stuff but not create the software. Hope that helps.

I agree with this. A graduate degree like a MS or PhD will blow away a BA or BS in terms of job qualifications.
