New build: Need help with Windows Install

I just built a new computer and installed Vista Ultimate only to find out I cannot upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium (it's a step down from "Ultimate").

Now I'm trying to install Vista Home Premium but it Windows Setup says it cannot install to this drive because it is GPT.
Everytime I reformat and delete and create a new partition I am unable to install because GPT.

The first time I installed Vista I never had this problem. Also, everytime I reformat, delete the partition and create a NEW partition it says Disk 0 Partition 3. How can it be 3 if I don't have any other?

Someone please help, I cannot install my OS and proceed with my new build until I get pas this GPT problem.

Windows are silly with partitions. Try use something like Hirens boot CD and use a disk format tool, maybe nuke it with EXT3 then put NTFS after that.. should get rid of any old partition information.

Hey thx for the advice. Before I came bakc to this thread i just popped the ssd into my laptop and did a format through windows there. Got it work.

Everything is running now and updating. Jesus this is so much faster than my Q6600.

Put in your Windows 7 Home Premium CD.
Go on with the installation, and when you get to the screen with the question of which drive you will install it on (and after which it usually gives you the error), press SHIFT+F10.
A windows command screen will apear.
In there, type

Code:

LIST VOLUME

A list of your disks and volumes will appear. Look in that list which volume you want to install windows on.
Type:

Code:

SELECT VOLUME ***

Where volume is the drive letter of the volume you want to install windows on.

Next, type:

Code:

CLEAN

to wipe the disk completely. For all clarity, I assume you don't mind, and already have all important data backed up.
Now type:

Code:

CONVERT MBR

to convert your disk to from GPT to MBR.
