How is 450 watts on the edge? I have a 100 watt CPU, a 55 watt GPU, a 5 watt hard drive, and presumably at most 30 watts from the motherboard/ram.

I understand what you are saying. TBH You would run fine a quality 400W PSU. I have a 6 core Phenom II @ 3.2 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, 9800GT, 1 5400 rpm drive, 4 15k drives, and a Dell PERC 5 RAID card that runs normal HTPC functions around 180-200W. I'm running it off of an Antec HCG 400

Your video card, that requires power. AMD recommends at bare minimum a 450W power supply, the last thing you want to do is skimp on what is driving your system. When you skimp on the power supply and meeting even minimum requirements the least of the issues is instability, the worst is it fries core components.

Manufacturer recomendations are largely inflated because of the number of poor quality PSUs that are not rated properly.

You are right, they do inflate the numbers and play it safe. With that said there is absolutely no reason to do it yourself and be certain that you are properly supplying your hardware. Seriously, the cost difference between a 400W and 500W is....well about zero, there is absolutely no reason to get a proper power supply.

When I upgrade the most I would probably get is something of a similar tdp if not maybe 70 watts higher than the current setup at the most. This is just a micro-ATX build with a single mid-range GPU and CPU. I guess the 530 watt I mentioned above will do then.

Also if you can find a 500 watt psu for $45-$55 then show me.

Anything a bit cheaper? Like $20 cheaper? I'm really tight on budget right now. I just finished upgrading the system not long ago with a new hard drive and graphics card.

Take everyones advise and get a decent 500-600 watt power supply. They are not much more money that any of you are linking and you will have wiggle room should you ever upgrade or want to oc everything.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027 $40 after rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017 44 bucks after rebate

Either of those would be fine and is pretty damn cheap. I'd personally go with something more robust but either of those will do the job.

Darn, I was hoping to do this the week after. I have finals next week so I could really avoid more distractions like this.

EDIT: Nevermind I'll just buy the Antex Earthwatts 500W
