AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2Ghz, 77-81 Degrees

Thread Starter
Hey team!

I just recently got a friends AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, as he upgraded and my old CPU was a Q6600, however it hits 80-81 degrees while I'm playing games, and as far as I remember I thought Deneb CPUs smelted at 60~ degrees? However.
Is this ok? My friend told me that the CPU can run to 99 degrees before shutting down so I should be ok, and he's been running at this heat for quite a while with no problems.

Should I upgrade the cooler or what do you guys think I should do?

I don't know that much about cooling and CPU temps so some guidance would be great :-)

Kind regards
~Neefy

I assume you are using the stock cooler? Did you reapply any thermalpaste?

Your friend was a bloody idiot! Allowing it to run at that heat for extended periods of time. 70 degrees is pretty bad, but 80-90! Christ.

What cooler is on it? And do you have Thermal paste on it? Also what voltage is it running at?

Did he give you the entire PC? IE motherboard and cpu already put together?

To me, it sounds like an outrageous amount of volts, A heatsink that hasnt been mounted properly (Which is hard to do with AM3 CPUs) or no Thermal paste......

Check those things Asap. And hope the CPU hasnt been damaged....

PS, even the stock heatsink wouldnt allow it to get that hot. Not a chance. They're crap coolers, but not that crap.

One of my friends has the same chip with a pretty decent after market cooler, the chip runs HOT!!!!!! We tore his rig down and try all sorts of things, shaved about 5-7 degrees off in the end

I assume your talking about a C2 stepping? I've owned numerous 955s and at full load even with stock cooler, temps never exceeded 60 degrees. And thats using intelBurnTest. Gaming, it wouldnt even be under full load.

Its user error.....

THIS ^^^

Even the day i got my cooler master 212, i decided to try the coolermaster thermal paste on teh stock heatsink just to see what I had been missing out since the stock TIM was crap and made my processor reach 70C sometimes. Never rose beyond 57C with the coolermaster thermal paste. Meanwhile when I put the CM212 on it with the new thermal paste, it never went past 49C. Anyway, i know random story. But yeah, that is way to hot, even if the fan on the heatsink died, it wouldn't get that hot i think.

I run a C2 in my current rig, with a $26 Hyper 212+ and never get above 50C overclocked at 3.6GHz.
Something has gone horribly wrong.

Yes it's the stock cooler, I got the mobo with the CPU and cooler seated already so I didn't apply any thermal paste myself.

Should I remove the CPU and reapply some new thermal paste? Or what's advice?

I can take a picture of it later if that'll help

EDIT:

Should I purchase a new cooler maybe? I only have 88 USD for the rest of the month however so my budget is extremely limited, would it survive until next month?

I'm not sure what stepping my friends was but at idle I think he was at around 55 degrees. Which seemed insane to me since I idle in the 20's. But I learned that it was just a hot chip. We tore everything apart and reset/pasted everything. Cable management brought temps down a few degrees but nothing earth shattering.

What I'd do: remove your stock cooler, apply some new thermal paste, and get yourself an H100 or a good equivalent of that.
80°C is ridiculous on stock speeds.
I can't even imagine what that would do to my 3930K on 4.7GHz...
