Help me pick a phone!

Thread Starter
So I'm in desperate need for a new phone, I'm still rockin' the Blackberry Bold 9000 (almost 5 years old now) , I got this phone as a hand-me-down and it was great at the time for what I needed in a phone.
Now there are several issues with the phone:
1. People can barely hear me on the phone.
2. I don't receive all the text messages that people send me.
3. The track pad on this phone is horrible.
4. It's not touch screen, I'm so used to my iPod Touch that when I pick up this phone I always try to hit the screen and nothing happens. What the heck! lol
5. Battery life is horrible.
6. I can keep on going if I think of more things but you get the point, I NEED A NEW PHONE.

Now I am looking at 2 phones in particular:
Samsung Galaxy Note - $249.99 with 2-yr contract
Samsung Galaxy SII - $99.99 with 2-yr contract

I will be getting the 2-yr contract price with AT&T for whichever phone I decide, one is more expensive than the other of course.

These are the only 2 phones that I'm looking at, unless you can convince me otherwise that there is a better phone out there for cheaper than the price of these.
(I don't want an iPhone so don't recommend that)

Here are some things that I need my phone to have:
Flawless music playback : I listen to music all the time, I always have to carry around 2 devices to listen to music at the moment; my Blackberry Bold 9000 just as a phone, and my iPod Touch 4th generation for music playback, so if possible I would like a phone that can play music flawlessly.
No lag: I hate lag with a passion. Currently my iPod Touch 4g lags on some apps, and it drives me crazy. I do not want to deal with lag if I have to carry around 1 device with me all the time, I want it to be responsive and work when I want it to!
Lots of apps: I need some apps to play around with in my spare time, for example: Pandora, Solitaire (play a lot of this on my iPod) , Facebook, some type of IM messenger.
And of course an easy to use UI. I'm used to my iPod Touch UI, so something similar to that (which isn't hard to find because everyone is copying Apple's touch screen) rolleyes.gif

Thanks for helping

Why not just get an iPhone then? Get rid of the iPod touch, and have everything you want in one device.

Sorry I should have mentioned, I don't want an iPhone, they're overpriced for what they offer.

I don't like the Note, it seems too big for my tastes.

SII is definitely a nice phone. Have you considered HTC phones like the Vivid or the One X? I have a Vivid personally and with ICS, it's a dream.

I too think the Note is too big. I have a Galaxy Nexus and love it. If you can, I would go for HTC One X, the phone is beautiful and right now probably the best Android phone out there. If you don't want that, then go for the S2. Good phone for a great price.

The note is a good phone, but is more for book reading, light video watching than music. I would place it as a good option. But first go the the store and try walking around with one in your pocket. If it does not fit and fit well, don't get it.

The SII is OK. Personalty I would get the HTC Resound (or sensation XE) over it. I really like HTC sense thought. It is upgraded to ICS already (don't know about the SII and note. Check if that is a strike vs them). ICS is Goodness in digital smile.gif The beats headphones are OK, very good for base even, but the software is nothing, literally nothing. It does make a great a great music player, I listen to mine a lot. They also should be on sale or much cheaper now that the X1 is out.

The other options are the SIII (soon) or the X1. If you have the funds the X1 will blow the others out of the water. It is the fasts, strongest and I think best looking out there. ICS and Sense 4 built in. The SIII is about the same but with different looks. Go SIII if you like doing the mods and ROMs.

I applauder your anti Iphone choice. ANy system where you would have to buy all your programs again is just wrong. While iPhony can play some music if you pay for it and have DRM specific for it, it is just so tiny. Its like a cute toy next to the X1 and the Note dwarfs it.

You try typing all that on an HTC Sensation XE wink.gif

PS. The 1X is not Quad-Core Tegra 3 in America. It is a slightly faster and much more battery friendly dual core Qualicom processor.

1. Android's are ok in this regard. Doesn't really matter what phone you choose
2. Not the phone. Your provider is dropping.
3. Trackpad - since all 'droids are touch i'm gonna just leave that as is.
4. As point 1.
5. Battery life is eh. At most a day I think. Not sure about the current gen i.e. One etc, as I don't have one.

As for the things you want;
1. Flawless Music - Any droid, and go to market and buy an app. The stock music apps are not bad by any means, but with Winamp and the like in the Market it really makes it harder for you to differentiate phones save finding out what phone has what DAC in it etc.
2. Lag - Most of the newer phones have very little of this, and even if they do, heading on over to XDA will usually solve most of that. Just be aware, quad's have a habit of using a bit more power, but it shouldn't be too bad.
3. Lots of Apps? Comparable to Apple's, but a bit lacking in some regards.
4. UI changes depending on phone, and again depending if you root and flash custom ROMs. Personally the Sense interface is nice. It's a lot better than it use to be. Xperia's is an almost flawless one too.

As for actual phones, it really depends on your budget. Judging from the two phones you have there, the GSII gets my vote, though I'd prefer the One X over both.
