From what I can actually read of your posts, you're trying to say most people would prefer W8s UI to say, KDE? Or Unity?

Yeah, real world experience says otherwise. Every "real world" person I've ever helped with computers is dead set against W8s UI.

Ubuntu is bloody simple. My grandma uses it fine, she had a wonderful time trying to understand Windows XP.

This. Couldn't read his post but I have to agree with you. I've converted most of my family to Linux machines and they love it more than Windows. I've also helped a ton of people around here and have gotten then to like it with no problem at all.

So I just picked up a 60GB Agility 3 SSD...and after reading through this thread, the first thing I installed was the latest Ubuntu desktop distro.

I have to say, the last time I touched Ubuntu, I DID have to mess around in terminal to get it working. However with 12.04 I have not had to touch a single CLI yet. This is also coming from someone who installed it on a laptop system with an AMD APU (not well supported yet) and I have no problem watching HD video.

This operating system is extremely simple to use. I love the software download center, it feels just like something you'd browse through on a smartphone or tablet. Everything you need to get your computer up and running is in the download center.

Like others have said previously, the only caveat is the problem of gaming. I think I'll leave ubuntu on my laptop for awhile and see if I still enjoy it a few weeks from now.

Which creates a problem, what if you are Creative. Now you know everything, you know exactly why their sound is much cleaner than yours. You can take what they do and find a way to "emulate" it, not really, with different instructions. Next thing you know, Creative sounds better than ASUS because they've taken the ideas that ASUS has and implemented them in their own way. Now ASUS can't do jack and crap, because there is no proof due to the fact that they went an entirely different route. Think wine and windows. Same code, different methods.
Never give up your secrets if they are what makes you money. Magicians anyone? Engineering is the same.

Then what is to stop people from copyrighting, trademarking, or patenting parts of/within programs down to the simple classes and calls and bits I often wonder? Seriously, I get scared that one day nothing in programming will be free to create with.

In your example ASUS has the ability to continue to innovate and probably legal action. What's wrong with allowing people to come up with different methods that lead to the same end result or a better/worse one? Sounds like a great way to really push innovation. Maybe there's some in between out there but I definitely think the current state of things is really well designed for nothing but incremental progression for maximizing profits. Just look at Apple and the iPhone. All of the "new" models were very incremental.

Ultimately, I think if done the right way the whole access to source would expose obvious infringement and likely lead to some fallout because of it.

@Slappa: Glad you got things working even with the AMD GPU tongue.gif...did you do anything to mitigate the write thrashing or whatever that ext4 might cause to an SSD?

Oh no, I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! I like people doing the same thing different ways, who knows which one is faster. I'm just saying, to make profit you don't really do that. lol I really think we have a LOT of the same views.

Great minds think a like(your's probably still greater though biggrin.gif)?

More on topic: For anyone interested in getting computers with Linux or without an OS...I made a thread.
