Just thought that you using modified drivers (so they'd install for the 680) originally intended for the 690/670 two days prior to your card dying may be of some relevance to this thread... While I am glad that you took them offline after your card dying, I am a bit concerned that you refrained from mentioning this while users spent their time helping you troubleshoot your issue... buttkick.gif I am just going to go out on a limb here and say perhaps Nvidia had a reason to exclude 680 support in this driver? I can in no way confidently say this contributed to your card's demise, but I think this information should be mentioned in the rare event that it did.

the thing is, the nvidia drivers are actually probably the same for most every geforce card out there. When I would use the 296.xx drivers for my 570 it would automatically pick up my gt220 and install that at the same time. so chances are even hacked drivers wouldnt cause this kind of issue.

there you can find other people modding the ini file and using the 670/690 drivers on their 680, go look and see if you see any dead gtx680 in there.

Also modifying ini files has for a long time been the only way of getting newer nvidia drivers into laptops, my acer aspire laptop is running on modded drivers and no issues to date. I've modded drivers for other people and no one has complained, many people do that kind of ini modification every day via laptopvideo2go.com and other sites.

The drivers themselfs are not hacked, only the INI file is modified to make the setup program accept the ID of the other card.

on Ati side the 3000. 4000. 5000. 6000 and 7000 series all use the same drivers.

on nvidia, the GeForce 301.24 Driver - BETA functions with most of their cards.

You don't have to like the tone, that's fine. Yes, I have read about drivers killing graphics cards, actually--the one I am recalling is in reference to improper fan control. It was ironically Nvidia, too. But like I already said, I cannot confidently say that in this case it had anything to do with your card dying. I just thought that it should be mentioned in the rare event that it did.

reference gtx 680's run 80° under load, it's normal, lol.

And @ OP: you asked yourself if they might have played with the dead card in the shop because the box seemed opened: it probably wasn't. My MSI reference one also didn't have any seal on it, it also had a normal plastic tape thing for the anti-static bag around the card itself. The card looked brand new so I wouldn't have worried about that!

Glad you're new card works fine though, good luck with your gtx 680, it's a monster smile.gif
