Why do 95% of people spread the TIM? - Page 11

I use the line method. Unless you apply atypical amounts of TIM, the pea method won't cover the surface area in its entirety. Its quite literally like trying to fit a round peg inside a square hole, with area left exposed around the circumference of the circle. A line is a physical & natural component of a square, so I find that I get near 100% coverage without thermal grease spilling over the sides.

I use an X with a few tiny dots to remove excess TIM from the spout.

Because they don't understand that spreading is actually called tinting and they were supposed to wipe the excess OFF, then apply a bead.

The "air bubbles" in the original vid don't exist when theres contact between two surfaces, they appear because of the surface tension when pulling them apart.

I'm a total noob and even I can tell that theres no major difference here. I feel dumber after reading the thread. :screwy:

I have been building PC's for over 12 years and I have not spread TIM ever since the good old days when the die was fully exposed on the CPU. These days I just go with a dot in the center and do what ever the manufacturer suggests.

The only bad TIM spread I have ever had was recently when I broke my system down for it's yearly cleaning. I noticed my temps kept consistently climbing month after month and have had this TIM on for over a year. The bad spread was due to lots of movement of my HS/FAN when I was struggling to get it to align with the back plate.

I recently switched to IC Diamond and their application instructions and found them to be very different from AS-5. Their recommended method a 5 to 5.5mm pea sized amount dead smack in the center of the IHS with a good amount of mounting force. I had to take my HS/fan off twice because I mounted it the fan the wrong way (yeah was having a bad day) and both times, the TIM was perfectly spread. IC diamond is like impossible to spread over the entire IHS because it's so thick and I have trouble just getting it out of the tube unless i soak it in a cup of hot water for at least 5 minutes.

what if you just applied an even thinner layer than normal, but to both the cpu and the heatsink? I would think it would just squish together and be airless. good idea, or a terrible one?

Sounds messy and unnecessary to me.

Grain of rice/Pea sized amount works best imo. Generally the least amount you can use, the better.

Lol yea you cant spread ic7 but i hate using it cause when you wipe it off all the info on the cpu will be nearly gone.

I don't think I've ever spread it out...I've always either done a light X or a box with a X

Personal preference probably
