Testbench with 18x Yate Loon 140mm Medium fans

I'm putting up a test rig on a Mo-Ra3 with 18x Yate Loon D14SM-12 and 2x Laing D5's.
All of the fans and the pumps will be controlled by a fan controller.

The thing is that according to the specs the fans draw 0.7A = 8.4W, but i've looked at 3 different tests with numbers and in all of them they never exceed 0.17A = 2.1W. I've already have a Lamptron FC5 that is rated to 4x30W so if in fact the fans draw no more then 3W it should be OK to hook 9 of them on each of the first 2 channels:

Channel 1: 9x Yate Loon D14SM-12 = 3x9 = 27W
Channel 2: 9x Yate Loon D14SM-12 = 3x9 = 27W
Channel 3: Laing D5 = 24W
Channel 4: Laing D5 = 24W

But i'm not really sure what numbers to go by.

Keep in mind all electrical motors have a much higher starting current then the running current. This is why most fan controllers will die when you are starting up a system rather then while running. This is why large data centers have all the hard drives start up in sequence rather than all at once.

The only way to really know it hooked up all the fans in parallel directly to a 12 V source and measure the current yourself with an analog meter. Most digital meters are very lousy at picking up starting current since it peaks so fast.

Yes, i think i'll go for the Lamptron FC9 hooking it up like this:

Channel 1: 6x Yate Loon D14SM-12 = 8.4x6 = 50.4W
Channel 2: 6x Yate Loon D14SM-12 = 8.4x6 = 50.4W
Channel 3: 6x Yate Loon D14SM-12 = 8.4x6 = 50.4W
Channel 4: 2xLaing D5 = 24x2 = 48W

This is going with the 8.4 (0.7A) that Yate Loon claimes it will draw, hopefully the fans wont go over that under start, considering that they only draw 2.1W while operating in all the reviews i would assume that this would be OK.

To be safe, just make sure the fan controllers are set to their minimum setting when powering on the rig.

Yes, i might end up using the FC-5 that i already have for the pumps, or just the speedcontroller that already is on the pumps and then run 5+5 on Channel 1 and 2 and 4+4 on channel 3 and 4 on the FC9
That should bring the total down to 42W Max on channel 1+2 and 33.6W on 3 and 4

I would not run the D5's off the controller.

Ok, because? I could run them by them selves and just use the integrated controller, but i like the option to have everything controlled by one fan controller.

Well, for one you are at the top-end of what the controller can handle... if it does actually do 50W. Its just a suggestion though, and I always go the safer route. I'm a skeptic though, and I don't trust that fan controller will handle that kind of amps without smoking. 2cents.gif

Yeah, good point, if in fact the fans draw 8.4w during start and the pumps stay at the rated 24w that would add up to a total of 199.2W (50.4+50.4+50.4+48) in total from a controller rated to 200W. If i run the pumps on their own that would bring to total down to 151W (42+42+33.6+33.6) so that should be well within the specs (Overclockers.uk tested one channel @ 44W and that was no problem with only 2.6% voltage drop IIRC)
