help with Core i7 860 overclock please!

Thread Starter
hello guys..

this is the first time I try to SERIOUSLY overclock my processor, what held me back in the past is that I didn't have an after-market cooler to start with, where now I have, though I know the cooler I have now is not that high-end one, but unfortunately, I couldn't find better than it here in Syria due to the limitation of goods in shops caused by the impact of sanction on Syria.

the cooler I have got is Phantom

I got it from this local store: http://dpsy.com/product.php?prod_id=496&disp=0_224

and to read the full story about why I decided to buy this cooler in particular and not a better one, here is the thread I discussed about it, which ended with the guys advising me to get this one.

now to the thread.smile.gif

so I want you guys to bear with me, since I don't have any previous experience in Lynfield CPUs overclocking.

well, let me tell you that I tried to overclock my CPU at about 3.2 GHz (146 *22) and it didn't post, neither it did when I lowered the overclock to 3.08 GHz (140 *22).

this was without touching the voltage, or coming around the RAM stuff, that I don't know what how much should I start increasing the voltage with, and I don't know what to do with the RAM really, sorry for this, but all I used to do for overclocking is raising the FSP and lowering the RAM (that was with LGA 775 processors) so this platform is totally new to me.

as my motherboard MSI P55-GD55 is not that popular, I took some snapshots of if for you to let you understand it, that you can tell me what areas to mess up with:

the Cell Menu is where to overclock in my motherboard, which starts with this main menu:

450

the Cell Menu (for overclocking and the like...)

1- 450

2- 450

3- 450

the motherboard is flashed to the latest BIOS available, which is 1.9.

my temp with internet browsing only (no intensive programs running):

365

I am not greedy, biggrin.gif I just want to reach my CPU to around 3.4 GHz to 3.6 GHz with HT on, and Turbo OFF, sure I want it to be stable 100% 24/7.

I hope you can help me achieve this guys.

I will be waiting to your help. smile.gif

best regards.

3.6Ghz should be doable. Set XMP memory profile. Set you BCLK to 165 and CPU multiplier to 21. Little harder to guess the CPU Voltage but 1.32V maybe and then adjust your RAM speed to get close to 1333MHz and the rest to auto. Turn off intel speedstep and turbomode.

XMP memory profile is what I couldn't understand or where to find it even ?? and how to exactly set it please ?

EDIT I just noticed the XMP profile, so sorry, but I wonder if there is a special settings for it ?

CPU-Z says that my processor is currently running at 0.8## voltage.

402

so when increasing the voltage in BIOS, usually the BIOS give me red coulor message saying it's starting to be dangerous after increasing the voltage around six notches, so I get scared redface.gif so what do you think ?

I have just come back from BIOS:

I set the XMP, then set the memory ratio to 4 which got my ram to 1200 with the BCLK set to 150*21 ( I think it was around 3.4 GHz), when I came to voltage, I couldn't change them, since they were set to auto without options to set them to manual, also there were several items regarding adjusting the voltage, so I didn't know which ones to set ??

I uploaded the photos of my BIOS because of this, I really feel like I am lost, the lynfield CPUs are way different from LGA 775 ones, I don't know what to do !!
I am pretty sure some guru here can explain step by step how to do it ??

now as these Lynfield processors are somewhat old and most of the guys experienced them, I hope I can reach a good result with your help.

I hope someone can take the time to illustrate the process on the picture I uploaded, sorry for asking this, but this for sure will give me a better idea, also lots of guys have achieved good overclock rates with several motherboard types, including the MSI P55-GD65, which I saw them so much popular, and most of the guys used got them.

I've OCed a i-870, but that was a ASUS motherboard. Try updating the BIOS, maybe that will give you voltage options.

first off, the motherboard is already flashed to the latest BIOS, second, I remember that I once could mess up with the BIOS, I just need to remember where that was, but what I want from you that you point me to what part of voltage settings I need to tweak ??

I am totally new to increasing the voltage, last time I overclocked a CPU was a C2D E8400 on Asus P5KPL-C/1600, which is a G31 chipset, I remember that I could have it running @ 3.6 GHz with stock voltage, and I could even go a bit higher, but I just preferred to stay in the sage margin, so now I am with a Core i7, I am not sure about how to go.

I have an i7-860, but w/ a evga board, and i've got mine at 4.2ghz right now w/ HT off, with HT on it was getting pretty hot. There are a few Lynnfield OC guides out there, I'd check those out if you haven't.

It would probably help if you turned off the C-States, Turbo, IEST. For voltage control, not sure what is up with your board, but you should be able to set the manual voltage. Once you get that figured out, you probably only need to adjust the cpu vcore, and VTT. I'd start at 1.25v for the cpu voltage, and maybe 1.2v for the VTT, and do some stress testing.

I'm in the airport right now, but can help more later if you want, I just OC'd mine like last month, so it's still pretty fresh. Good luck.

so much appreciated my dear, rep for you, for sure I welcome every single attempt of help, regarding my board, I searched google several times, but I couldn't get results about it with the same CPU, but I wonder if the settings of P55-GD65 is the same as the -GD55 version ??

sure I don't want to lose the HT, even if this will result in lower OC, otherwise, why I bought an i7 ?? instead I could get an i5 and save some bucks,

regarding my motherboard again, as I said, I am totally new to tweaking the voltage, I have never done this before with any previous processor, and especially the P55 platform, as you say, my motherboard has lots of stuff regarding the voltage, and I don;t know where to start from ??

illustrating the photos I uploaded of my BIOS a bout what parts to tweak with the sagest values, would encourage me so much, sure I don't care about Turbo, but I just want to have my CPU run @ 3.4GHz ~3.6 Ghz with HT on, stable 24/7 100%.

thanks again, and happy flight smile.gif .

Even your same board w/ a different CPU is fine if you can find some info, it's all the same theory, i3, i5, i7 all OC the same on the p55 platform.

Even with HT off the i7 > i5; it still has that extra 2mb l2 cache, and that does make a difference. Keep it on though, especially for a mild 3.5-3.6 OC.

Here are the settings I would try to change in your BIOS:

450

450

165*21 is 3.465 Ghz, so that's a nice place to start for your desired OC. Try to adjust the values I highlighted, let me know how that works out for you. For stress testing, I like a little Intel Burn Test for max temps/quick stability check, run that for maybe a half hour or so, and if you're satisfied with the temps, then try running prime95 for 12+ hours, custom blend w/ 90% of your RAM.

After that, fold on it for Chimp Challenge for 10 days wink.gif If you don't crash, you're stable.

Best of luck.
