Just a quick question, why is your stock speed 1.2GHz?!?!
I have an Intel i7-960, and its stock speed is 3.2GHz, and now its 4GHz, and stable!!! (I do have a custom H2O loop)

Last time I have herd of a desktop processor being below 3GHz is on a MAC. Below 2GHz, well, I would get a new processor...

cpu voltage is the voltage for the cpu...
vtt voltage is the voltage for the IMC
set the cpu voltage to 1.3
set the vtt voltage to 1.3
lower your RAM speed to a notch below stock..as when you raise the Base Frequency
it raises your RAM frequency, too ...you should figure out the right RAM timings for 2 different frequencies(probably the 2 fastest ones wink.gif )
Good luck! after you get it to 3.6 or so..try lowering the vcore and see if still stable biggrin.gif
the lower speed is due to EIST..I'd leave it on..Helps keep CPU cool/uses less power.
only adjust vcore(cpu voltage) IMC (VTT) and RAM
Leave LLC or vdroop control disabled

Even with HT off the i7 > i5; it still has that extra 2mb l2 cache, and that does make a difference. Keep it on though, especially for a mild 3.5-3.6 OC.
Here are the settings I would try to change in your BIOS:
450
450
165*21 is 3.465 Ghz, so that's a nice place to start for your desired OC. Try to adjust the values I highlighted, let me know how that works out for you. For stress testing, I like a little Intel Burn Test for max temps/quick stability check, run that for maybe a half hour or so, and if you're satisfied with the temps, then try running prime95 for 12+ hours, custom blend w/ 90% of your RAM.
After that, fold on it for Chimp Challenge for 10 days wink.gif If you don't crash, you're stable.
Best of luck.

Ohh... man, I have just read this, I will try the settings you said in the next few hours and then report back what happens for sure, rep for you dear. biggrin.gif

yeah, I also tend to leave EIST on, but can I leave the halt on too ?? this protects the CPU, right ?

this is due to all BIOS settings being still on stock, which means the EIST is enabled, therefor the CPU will preserve power when idle (no intensive programs running).

well, this is what happened when I tried to proceed:

I set the frequency and the like as you guys told me to do, and disabled what was supposed to be off, but when I went to the Voltage, this is what happened, that when I pressed the Plus (+) button on the CPU voltage, it turned from Auto to (+0.006) another notch increased it to (+0.0012) then to (+0.0012) then to (+0.0018) and it got to red coulor when increased another notch to (+0.0024) and here I thought of asking you whether this is normal or not, and also I would like to ask you, you mean when I set the voltage to 1.25 it will show like (+1.25) ?? sorry for this, but I am rather scared redface.gif .

Hmm, that's interesting, typically p55 boards would let you manually specify the voltage, but no worries, it's just using "off-set" voltage. In that case, it would be a good idea to figure out what the CPU's voltage is by default, because when you "off-set" it by increasse .006, .0012, etc, it's good to know where you're starting at.

So try stress testing in windows with the cpu voltage set on auto, while maxing out your CPU, open up CPU-Z and check the "Core Voltage", that value is what you will be adding to. After you get that value, you will know how far you can safely off-set the voltage. Really I have no problem running my i7 up to 1.4-1.45v, but most people like to keep it under 1.4v, for your mild OC goals, you shouldn't have to off-set the voltage too much, I would seriously be surprised if you need more than 1.3v for stability.

well, here is the snapshot you asked for:

402

and here is another one without Prime95 (it's weird to see the voltage is higher without Prime95 running !!! LOLLLL)
397

seeing the snapshot, I am surprised that the multiplier is set to x22, I am sure I left it to default in BIOS, which is x21, is this due to the TurboBoost ? I think so.

back to the topic, regarding the voltage stuff, actually I didn't try to set the voltage manually by adding numbers of my desires, I just tried to press the "+"button to unlock the voltage control and it worked and then tried to increase them gradually, I will see if I can set them manually, but again I would like to ask, as I clarified the way my BIOS shows off the voltage values (+#.###), so do you think setting it to 1.25 as you recommended would look like (+1.25) ??, (+1.025) ?? or even (+0.125) ?? I don't think the last guess is true, since CPU-Z showed the default voltage with the CPU on idle as 0.864 which may look like (+0.864) right ??

I need an answer about what I asked please before I proceed, as I said, once I set the CPU voltage to (+0.0024) which is about 4 notches interments, the Voltage value turns to RED coulor as a clue of a danger action, so increasing the voltage to 1.25 ~1.3 will be way high, that I think it's 10 of notches increments, so I wonder if it's safe to do it ?? or the BIOS will warn me this time maybe in Violet coulor ?? thinking.gif

I need answer to encourage me to increase the voltage to the suggested numbers after what I explained or not.
