help with Core i7 860 overclock please! - Page 3

Do me a favor and go into your BIOS, try to increase the voltage and take a picture so I know exactly what the board is telling you under the voltage setting. Set it back if you don't feel comfortable leaving it that way and then post the picture on here. I also have a Lynnfield and an MSI board so I think I can help.

OK, here are the pics you asked for dear:

in the first photo as you see I set the necessary tweaks to reach around 3.4GHz with HT on and Turbo off

450

the following photo shows where I was trying to set the voltage, in an earlier post, I said I will try to find out whether I can insert the voltage values/numbers manually or not, unfortunately I couldn't do it, I was only capable of pressing the plus (+) button to increase the voltage values, in the photo, the value of (+0.0018) is the last value before it turns to red coulor notifying me that I am close to danger, once I increase it another notch (+0.0024) it turns to red.

450

to my surprise, the last value I could reach with voltage was (+0.303), which seemed so much weird to me as in CPU-Z the voltage was about 0.8## on idle.

450

now I am really confused, confused.gif does this mean that I am going to stay on stock speed ?? eek.gif

sure afterall, I didn't proceed, I posted here to discuss if I can safely proceed or not with the voltage tweaks.

I forgot to add something, regarding the XMP profile, once I enable it, the previous overclock settings reset to stock eek.gif

Well don't go up to .303, that would surely put your CPU voltage over the "safe" limit.

I'd start with +.0018, then boot into windows, and see what your vcore is in CPU-Z, check to see how much it increased it over the Auto setting, then just bump it up from there. That's what I had to do on my SandyBridge rig when I was using offset voltage.

Regarding your next post, no need for using the XMP profile, your timings are all ready set by the looks of it, and you're overclocking so don't even worry about using the XMP profile.

now this is what happened:

I set the speed like : 155 x21, and it for (+0.0018) voltage for the CPU and (+1.200) for the CPU VTT, and couldn't find anything called LLc or VDroop, after that , I saved and restarted, but it could barely logged to Windows, and crashed a within a minute while I was taking some snapshots of CPU-Z with Prime95 and Core Temp running.

after that, I restarted and entered the BIOS again and modified the settings to be: 153 x 21 with the same voltage values., which has given me a speed of 3.2~ GHz.

this time when I logged in to Windows, and then ran the same applications: P95, CT, and took those snapshots for you, but to my surprise, not all cores were working though I am sure I didn't touch them in the BIOS, in BIOS ALL processors were activated.

here are the snapshots :

403

399

463

359

189

you can notice that in Prime 95 and CPU usage, that not all processor cores were running, why is this ??

now I am going to reset the settings to its defaults until I get some answers and discuss this initial trial.

Ok, well I was just meaning to raise the voltage on stock clocks, oops, I guess I should have specified that. All the cores not running, and windows crashing is because you need more vcore. Try reverting your bclk back to 133, leave the voltage as is, actually drop the CPU VTT for now, and running prime95, then check the voltage in CPU-Z.

now all settings are on stock, and everything is going normal, all cores are functioning normally, but I couldn't figure out why should I leave the speed on stock and raise the voltage ??

So you can see how much adjusting the offset voltage increasing your vcore. Try gradually increasing the offset higher, +.0018 -> +.0024, etc, until you get to around 1.25-1.3v in windows.
