What to get for my birthday?

Thread Starter
So my birthday is coming up and as usual its upgrade time for me. I could get a second 470 since ive ALWAYS wanted to SLI, but seeing as i have a 1280X1024 monitor i find that HIGHLY wasteful tongue.gif

My other option is to get a nice 1920X1080 monitor and roll with my current 470 and just overclock it, which would leave me room to upgrade to SLi in the future.

My third option is to watercool my current 470 (it is way too loud for my liking), i can do this for about 65$ and it will allow me to overclock it like its nobodies bidness, and when i feel like spending more money i can get a monitor later on down the road and have a card that will do reasonably well at the high res. I am leaning towards this since its the cheapest and the other options only increase my noise levels, which is very annoying to me.

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for somthing i should get for my birthday let me know, doesnt have to be graphics card related.

I would say the monitor... Much more to fit on the desktop and better viewing overall...
Huge difference to make more use of your 470...
Another one would be nice, but 1280x1024 is just too old school for me... just my opinion...

Monitor. Oh god monitor. You shouldn't be spending the money on watercooling an older card like that and don't even think about going SLI with your current monitor.

TL;DR: Monitor. /thread

I should have mentioned that im blind, not like physically blind, but my vision is low enough to make me qualify to eb legally blind. My desktop is at 1024X768 no matter how large the res can go. Ive used a 1920X1080 monitor before and it sucked, the text is too small for me to read ingame, and im 3 inches from the monitor as it is. Which is why i havent upgraded yet. But im open to trying to adapt, since GTA IV is unplayable due to a CPu bottleneck caused by my monitor.

In response to the new information I can't think of a recommendation that I really like. Maybe just the biggest monitor you can find with the lowest resolution available. It will still probably have to be 1080p but maybe look for like a 32" 1080p TV/monitor that you would run at a resolution lower than 1080p.

If that's legally blind without correction then maybe you should go for some lenses biggrin.gif.

well i would say go for water cooling then. you dont need a new monitor so make it quieter since the 470 fan is so loud. being that it will be that cheap for you to do it, i would say that it would justify spending the money on an older card.

I still think that investing the $100 into a waterblock for the 470 is a bad investment, but I suppose because he can't really up his resolution a whole lot then it might not be a bad idea because he can stick with the 470 for so long.

Actually if you want to make it quieter then look into putting an antec 620 onto the GPU, you would be able to do that for about $70 total and it could carry over to your next card if you'd like. Check out these three links.

The 470 still holds its own, this things a beast and i would probobly never upgrade if i kept my current monitor. but i agree about the WC, keeping it quiet is my number one priority right now.

lol, the only reason im not getting a new monitor, WC and a second 470 is because the rest of my money is going to bi-optic lenses so i can actually drive and watch TV. My vision is sorta fine with glasses on, as long as im close.

I have thought of that, and it made sense until I tried it and realized that the distance that i had to sit away from the monitor in order for me to see the whole screen at once was farther than i could actually see tongue.gif. So the monitor needs to be physically small so i can cram my face into it and still get the whole screen area.
