Not really sure what the question is. That looks like sufficient hardware to me. Depending on the activity level of each VM you should assume 1 or 2 VMs per core. Also considering the same the amount of memory will vary. It's just a single ubuntu server VM with an FTP daemon that would need very little RAM (for example).

Which OS will you use for the host? Hyper-V? KVM? Xen? Some kind of daemon-ized VirtualBox? VMWare on some kind of linux? That would also have an impact on RAM/processor cores...

Probably be using Xen and esxi, although I will not be surprised if I run into comparability issues with esxi.
The VMs will probably be different flavors of Linux running very low traffic services. Maybe a single server 08 instance.

I am mostly wanting to get a feel and learn about virtualization. If at the end it doesn't turn out, I can just upgrade my media pc

Well don't know what level of learning you're aiming for but I learned an awful lot with VirtualBox on my normal desktop PC. Actually I still utilize VirtualBox on a regular basis. Way faster OS installs that way. Just putting it out there.

I think he is looking for experience with a hardware hypervisor like ESXi or XenServer, so VirtualBox won't do him much good.

VirtualBox is good for learning a new OS, or playing with viruses and what not. ESXi/XenServer are what businesses use to host different VMs. They offer lots of features like HA and live-migration. I'm assuming the OP wants to get familiar with this type of environment. Plus, using a hardware hypervisor leaves more resources to be used by the VMs

Protomox is worth a look too. It's essentially the same sort of thing as ESXi but with Debian + KVM + Qemu.
It's also got more features than the free version of VMWares hyperviser.

ESXI although you might have compatability issues it is very easy to setup and start tinkering with on a basic level that'll work and 8GB is enough ram for now

Yeah, I am on a pretty tight budge so unfortunately that particular motherboard only has two dimm slots. Maybe later I can upgrade to two 8GB modules or another motherboard.

I did want to say, I got the parts ordered. I did change out the corsair power supply for an Antec earthwatts 380watt. Should be plenty of juice to power it, and it was a little more efficient.
