dust is a possibly. especially if your "buddy" smokes and has a pet.
The dust can block the video card heatsink, causing a high idle and high load. Instead of the air going through the heatsink it instead goes around it because the dust makes it too restricted.

worth a shot, either visually check or get a can of compressed air

Yes, you are correct. However since the OP has reseated once and made no mention of dust, I guess we assumed that was not an issue.

For what it's worth, a heavy combination of pet and smoke dust won't come out with just canned air. Not fully at least. Powered air compressors work wonders though.
