Accident fault is usually determined by who hit who. The automatic car should be treated just like whoever was in it was driving.

Why not?

A gyro would give the computer all the information it needs to counter-steer. Most cars already have stability control systems in place to manage the throttle and brakes in a slide.

I'm willing to bet it can react a lot better than us slow humans, assuming they program it to.

In those situations (and yes, I have had a blow out) you do well to realise what is happening, let alone do anything constructive about it in time. Even high speed pursuit police, some of the best drivers around, can't really fully control a high speed blow out, or being clipped unexpectedly.

I really want self driven cars to become a reality. To have a driver that never falls asleep, uses it's phone or gets drunk would be awesome. Just like having a private chauffeur.

I think the point was not in the cars ability to remain in control, but be able to react to, say, a car that swerves into your lane. If I saw a car coming at me in my lane, I would dive to the shoulder or even off the road to avoid hitting that car head on. A robot car may be programmed to slam on the brakes and remain in its lane, which in most cases will result in a collision.

Well that comes down to programming.

If done correctly I would put money on the robot driver being a lot better than humans. They can judge distances, speeds and conditions faster and make a decision based on the best probable outcome.

We humans just react, often mindlessly. Incidentally that is one reason why driving on the left is sometimes safer, in a reaction situation most people instinctivly pull to the left.

And before you think I am saying you are a poor driver consider this; you may be the best driver in the whole world, but how good are the drivers around you?

I would love to have one, I can't get the doctors to give a release to the Department of Motor Vehicles (I've had several strokes)
They haven't let me drive since 2006.
Something like this would be awesome for me !!!!
I would like to implement voice command also with things like "Get ya road on" to get us traveling biggrin.gif
