I really doubt it.... Look at it from a simple business end. How much money will go into the hardware and software?? They would have to make that up with profit for every sale and doing $99 per console would KILL them financially.

Personally, this would anger me to no end. I think you skipped over the part where they bundle in an expensive service offering making the real cost of the console more than $99. I think many other people would make this mistake too.

It just feels cheap. I don't know if I'm less receptive because of the past or what and I don't want to sound like Chicken Little but you can tell that marketing is testing the waters with things like this. This generation is also going to be choke held when it comes to reselling games... it smells like nickles and dimes, even if it isn't.

Not on your life.
They will cost a hundred bucks and they will charge you for that extensive data plan that over two years will end up costing you well over a thousand dollars instead of the olden days when the consoles launched at three or four hundred dollars.
The only way this works is in their benefit. Is content really that much more advanced since PSOne or even NES or SNES? I don't feel like it is. I feel like I was engaged more by SNES and Genesis than I ever was by anything on 360 or PS3.

It'll come back to the exact situation we have on PC but worse. You can buy these super expensive console games, or buy the PC version that drops price within months of release and goes on sale for mere dollars. Except the console game prices could sky rocket and the online subscriptions would become super huge.

The contract with phone works because the service is something you'll be buying anyways, so you might as well lock yourself in since you'd be buying that service for the foreseeable future anyways. I don't see myself ever paying to play a console beyond the initial price and the games. xbox live is such a ripoff.

Well obviously it would depend on what else the bundled with the contract. Perhaps you would also get netflix or get one or two games along with it or something along those lines.
