[IGN] Could next-gen consoles cost $99? - Page 7

If true ( highly doubtful ) I would be interested, I do not own a console right now, the high price of games plus the console price is quite high for my taste, but i'm highly excited about Microsoft right now, between their phones, OS, and next gen console, they have the change to get everything to work together quite nicely.

Also, I wonder if this contract or whatever they decide to call it, would help build credit? (lord knows i could use it) Not alot of 16-21 year olds have credit, and this could be a chance for them to establish some.

But, if this is a month to month thing, what happens when you miss a payment? are you no longer able to use your console?

Lastly, XBL is not 100% profit for microsoft, all that data requires servers, power, a building to store it in, staff to work on it, etc...

But I guess the subscription is pure profit for everything they sell, so it would be worth the risk?
Still, I don't like a)gambling with the idea that these people are going to keep good on their contract, or b)committing a 14 year old kid to a potentially credit-damaging obligation if they default on it. Phones are different and the people who buy them are a different demographic. This seems like a bad idea.

I'm not sure how the laws are near the gates of hell, but here you can't enter into a legal contract with a minor. You need parental consent.

Either way. This is how it would go.
Kid : "you never really loved me and I caught you with the babysitter last month. can I haz videogames?"
Parent : "I have completely checked out. I'll sign this and then go take some xanex and lie down"
Kid : "yay. This can be my new dad."
Parent : "hey kid, you flunked out of remedial math"
Kid : "Suck it noob, I pwned u"
Parent : "oh, well that's it. this system is gone."
Kid : "noooooooooooooooooo..........oooooooooooooooooo............zors"
Microsoft Legal : "hey buddy...."

The way those things work is that even though the kid can't be held legally accountable for the contract, the parent still can be. So basically what you're saying is that in a country where the average personal debt is ~8 grand per person, it's a reasonable proposition to sell...what? 20 million? contracts for hundreds if not thousands of dollars of liability? This is just another wall keeping average people from being upwardly mobile so they can buy into an IV drip of consumption and debt. Companies that do this type of crap, especially with the current state of this country, should be ashamed.

[edit] fun fact "Massachusetts" translates to "near the great hill" in wampanoag.

Any else surprised that Apple haven't jumped into this market with an offering, as the opposition have clearly modelled their business plan on the itunes experience ?
