How many rads for 580 OC tri-SLI ?

Thread Starter
Hi

I'm planning a new build. I want it to have fully future-proof cooling, therefore I want it to be able to handle 3 overclocked 580s and a 2500k.

Would a dual rad for the CPU in a seperate loop, and one triple rad for the GPUs be best? Or would I really need to do a single loop with 2 triple rads?

The more surface area the better, but ambient air temp as well as expected air flow are also factors. I am using a MO-RA3 For a similar setup. I believe, given enough surface area and flow, a single loop is just as good (at least within a few degrees) as any potential dual loop. Further, don't forget that you could always put another radiator in series should you need additional thermal cooling capacity.

Single loop is generally better at partial loads, as the unused cooling from one component can go to the others. Even at full load, a dual loop with the same amount of radiators will perform the same as a single.

As for the amount of cooling for a 2500k and 3x580's, it's going to depend a bit on the fans you're using. Assuming medium speed fans (like AP-14 or AP-15 at max speed), a single loop with 1x240 and 1x360 should be just fine. If you're wanting to run 800rpm fans or something, you will likely need more radiator or temps will suffer.

First what is your case. You need to know if the case can handle that many rads. If you haven't bought a case yet I would recommend a Magnum M8 from CaseLabs. It's about 300 bucks but if you are going 3 way SLI 580s then I would advise a case that can accommodate all the rads you would need.

Also which model 580? 580s come in so many models the price ranges from $430 cards to $659 card (EVGA Hydro series)

I would imagine for 3 GTX 580s you would want a 420x60mm or even a 420x80mm. I heard Alpha cool actually makes a 420x80mm rad now.

Also I would like to know why 3 580s instead of getting a 680? The 680 series would be a far better buy than 3 580s.

Btw! I'm assuming you haven't ordered yet. Order from EVGA considering you can get life time warranties for their cards. I always recommend XFX and EVGA when it comes to video cards. If you get an EVGA, make sure the SN ends in AR or KR. This being their life time warranty cards or so I've been told.

Here is a list of a few GTX 580s. (Newegg comparison chart)

Here is a GTX 680s comparison.

Just need to know a few things before someone could help you. Would seem odd to WC a hydro series card IMO.

Also I am no expert like Juggalo so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Ok, I will definitely go single-loop. I was unfortunately planning 800rpm fans. I suppose I might need to get an external rad like the 9x120mm Phobya nova. I have explored this option before, and I wouldn't mind it aesthetically. (In February I considered tacking that rad to my CM Storm Scout, a plan that I have now abandoned.) Could a 9x120mm Phobya nova cool those components at only 800rpm? Or should I go for the Phobya outside AND a rad inside?

The case I am looking at at the moment is the NZXT Phantom, simply for it's look, but as I mentioned previously in this post, I may be going for external rads anyway. If you look in my sig you can see that I already have a PNY reference 580. The only thing that concerns me is VRAM, so I may change the GPU choice because of that, but that is not for this thread. The Phobya would easily handle that with 800rpm fans, it's a giant radiator. I was thinking more like 6x120 or 7x120 at 800rpm, and you'd still get better than air temps with just 5x120.

Im running tri sli 580s and a 2600k at 5ghz 1.49 vcore with a magicool 360 rad and a phobya 200mm rad single loop. My temps are cpu 60c max load gpu 45c max. It all depends on the amount of rads, flow rate, and type of fans.

Have you thought about the Switch 810? I am using that with a Black Ice GT 420 Rad. 6x140mm Aerocool Shark Black Editions are very nice if you have a fan controller. On high they move I believe its 96.3 CFM or something around the mid 90s. 140x140x25 so it's fairly low pro fans.

What is your budget first off? If you want to go external might I recommend a 60mm Rad. Having twice the size could really do some cooling. I've even heard of 80mm but have never seen it posted on a site.

Edit: You could always sell that 580 and push for a 590. Clocks are almost identical but you can get a full 16x out of the PCI instead of splitting to 8x8 or 4x w/e.
It would also might save money on having to buy 3 580 back plates for WC. I know the back plate for my 7970 is around 100 bucks a pop.

I know this isn't a GPU thread for 2 more PNY 580 will cost you almost 900 to 1000 dollars depending if you have the enthusiast edition.
You might as well by an EVGA GTX 690 for that price and pawn off your old 580.

PNY GTX 580 - $420 + w/e your water block cost.
Core Clock: 772MHz
Shader Clock: 1544MHz
CUDA Cores: 512
Effective Memory Clock: 4008MHz

EVGA GTX 690 - $1000 (EVGA has life time warranties too)
Core Clock: 915MHz
Boost Clock: 1019MHz
CUDA Cores: 3072
Effective Memory Clock: 6008MHz
Memory Size: 4GB
Memory Interface: 512-bit
Memory Type: GDDR5

2 GTX 580 = $840
2 GTX 580 Water Blocks = $260
(Assume you have a third already)

GTX 690 WB - Haven't found one yet, still on their way out I guess.

But yeah if you're going outside rad then get a wide one, 60mm. It really depends on your price range.
