Looking for an amp

Thread Starter
First, this amp is for my CAR. I realize there isn't a 'car audio' section but I figured this section would be pretty close.

Anyways, I need an amp that can put out 600W RMS per channel(or at least close) and that has two channels. It can be 600W RMS at either 2 ohms or 4 ohms, doesn't matter. It'll be powering two Alpine Type-R SWR-1023D subs. I'd like to keep it under $200 if possible, any suggestions?

Any particular reason for a two channel amp? A single 2 ohm mono amp would do just as well....or even two 4 ohm amps. At your budget though 600 watts RMS is going to be difficult to be honest. I'll look around but hopefully someone else can chime in with a recommendation.

What subs are you going with exactly? Dual 2 ohm or Dual 4ohm?

And no, you do NOT want a two channel amp. You'll need a 1500+w monoblock to effeciently power two Type R 12's. What are the specs of the enclosure you plan to use? Didn't realize those were 10's....you'll still want around 1500w for two of the tens. Why would you go with 2x 10's though?

EDIT:
And do you already own the Type R's? Because a LOT better can be had for very similar money.

A monoblock is fine then, I just didn't know that would be preferred in this type of thing. I already own one of the Type-R's, so I was going to purchase a second one unless that would be a bad idea. They are the dual 2 ohm versions, also.

The enclosure has a .7 cubic feet of airspace per sub and is sealed. It's a custom enclosure for the back of my Iroc-Z.

Dual 2 ohm coils huh? That means a 2ohm or 0.5ohm load at the amp. Which means you need around 1200-1500w RMS at 2ohm. That's going to be tough in your price range. Doable, but tough.

Do you already have charging system upgrades? What type of wiring are you running?

Just a forwarning, 1200-1500w RMS is a LOT to pull off stock electrical. I have a feeling you're going to run into issues there, depending on how everything is setup.

Can you tell me EVERYTHING you possibly can about your charging system, batteries, wiring, big 3, etc, etc...so I can get a better feel of what you're going to need to do this?

EDIT:
And 0.7 cubic feet huh? I assume sealed, because 0.7 cuft is nowhere NEAR big enough to run ported for a 10....

Have you thought about running just a single larger 12, and ported?

those 500watt alpine amps cant thing of a model number off the top of my head i used to have one with a type r was happy with it for the price, the one amp should be within your budget and is actually a decent amp. wont be enough to fully power your 2 type r s but if your in a budget it should be fine, and its going to be a less chance of blowing the speakers, and less strain on the vehicles electrical system.

Actually, Alpine amplifiers, while great, are quite over priced. And underpowering subs is a LOT worse than overpowering them, as you introduce clipping by trying to power them harder than what the amp can do.

The alternator on it is a 105 amp I believe, It could be a 140 amp but I can't remember. It does just fine keeping up with the current sub + two amps, even if everything else electrical is running(wipers, lights, radiator fans, etc). Car battery is brand new(sort of), but I don't got the specs off hand on that. My estimate is I'm currently pulling 800 - 850 RMS from system now just from the sound alone.

As far as wiring goes is I have 4ga wire coming off the battery running to a fuse, then going into a distribution block splitting into dual 8ga wires for both my amps currently. They are both grounded by 4ga wire. I have not changed the stock wiring from the alternator to battery, battery to chassis, etc, but I have plenty of extra cable laying around to which I would be able to do quite easily if need be. I assume that is what you are asking by my wiring.

Yes, my box is sealed with .7 cubic per sub. I have not really considered going over to a 12" ported because I heard that the 10" size subs are typically better for the type of music I listen to(rock, alternative, electronic, etc)

your not going to damage the speakers by underpowering them. but lets not get into that in this thread, yes the alpines maybe over priced, if the op is open to "non mainstream" brands then he will definatly get a better product for the buck. but unless you buy something used you will not get a true 1000+ wrms amp. and like pioneer started to ask, vehicle electrical upgrades. as they will = blowing the budget just on wiring if you get into the higer rms wattage systems.

Wow that went quickly. Here is a link to the Datasheet for those subs if anyone wants to take a look.
