680 oc vs 7970 oc at 1600p BF3 (vs 670 oc?)

Thread Starter
Hello!

So i finally ordered my Dell U3011, but I'm still deciding which GPU to get. Read many reviews and threads but I woudn't mind more input! I'm basically looking at these cards

MSI 680 Twin Frozr 2gb - $819 SGD = 655.2 USD (3 year warranty)
Palit 680 Jetstream 2gb - $769 SGD = 615 USD (2 year warranty)
Sapphire 7970 OC - $769 SGD = 615 USD (2 year warranty)

New!
GTX 670 - $569 SGD = 455.2 USD

Or even these if necessary

MSI 7970 Lightning - $859 SGD = 687.2 USD (3 year warranty)
Palit 680 Jetstream 4gb - $859 SGD = 687.2 USD (2 year warranty)

Note the 7970s DO NOT come with bundled games, BF3 included would have swayed me to the AMD side as the 7970 oc and 680 oc should perform more or less the same. Just the way it is in Singapore. I'm looking at as smooth a playing experience as possible with Max FXAA. Maybe 50-60 fps on multiplayer? Don't know if this is possible.

If anyone has the same monitor set up, do let me know your experiences and why I might choose one over another. I will be ocing the GPUs. Thanks! smile.gif

I'll be playing lots of D3 as well if that changes anything. Probably the only 2 games I'll be spending time on.

The Sapphire HD 7970 OC DUAL X is a good card

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/10/sapphire_hd_7970_oc_edition_video_card_review/7

If you are willing to OC with extra voltage you should hit 1250 Mhz.

By the sounds of the 670 I would hold off a couple of days too see what 670 SLI does, I think it could kill 680 and 7970 for the same price.thinking.gif
After reading your post again, the 4G 680 could be best for running that res.thumb.gif

You really done need anymore then 2gb of vram for running at 2560x1600. Really no matter what card you get you'll b fine. Do you care about colour scheme, if so, you could just base your choice around that, if not, you could always try Eeny, meeny, miny, moe rolleyes.gif.

Hmmm no I would think 4GB of vram for 1600p would be better...

OP I would go with a 4GB 680

It wouldnt hurt to go the 4gb route, but not even bf3 at max will use 2gb. If you have the money for it go for it, but if you could invest the money else where that may prove to be better in the long run.

Edit - Considering the actual price difference, grab a 4gb if you can find one

I think you would be mistaken. I'm at 1600p with a 7970. I have ZERO games that even use 2GB of VRAM.

Honestly, just pick whichever card is cheaper. They'll all do the job just fine at 1600p.

EDIT:
Between a Palit 680 and a Sapphire 7970, get the Sapphire 7970. Much more reputable name behind it.

Alright, will spend some more time thinking, though I do agree that so far in the reviews I've read, the 680 performs fine even though it only has 2gb of ram. That's with no MSAA of course, though I'm not sure how much better bf3 will be at 1600p with or without MSAA.

MSAA causes a huge performance hit in BF3. You'll want to use other AA methods such as FXAA instead. 680 and 7970 will both max out BF3 with SOME form of AA though at 1600p.
