Safe to tape CPU to cooler?

Thread Starter
First off: No I am not stupid.

I am doing a mobo swap with a P5Q Deluxe tomorrow, and I need to srtrip the system down tonight. I understand the H60's TIM is rather good, and I would want to keep it if possible. Is it possible, that when I take the CPU out of the socket I can tape it to the H60 so the TIM doesn't get dust and stuff in it? Or will this damage it? I am not a n00b, just trying to think of a novel way to keep the high quality TIM safe.

I don't see a good way of doing this without messing up the bottom of the CPU. Depending on the circumstance occasionally the CPU sticks to the heatsink so if you get lucky it might stick long enough for you to slap it in the new motherboard.

Well if I use masking tape, It should be fine, especially on an LGA CPU right? If it is really a bad idea, I do have some DeepCool Z5 handy.

No. Do not do this. You'll get debris on the CPU contacts, which would be much worse.

Also, the TIM on the Corsair coolers is good, but there's way too much of it. Go get a quality TIM from your local computer shop, clean off the CPU IHS and Corsair heatsink, then reinstall on the new board.

Above provided to help you just in case you're not trolling.

You'd still be touching the LGA contacts. Your best bet is to just use the DeepCool and not bother yourself with trying. At most it's going to be 1*C-2*C anyways.

The bracket holding down the CPU would separate the CPU from the cooler anyway. No way around that unless you took off the bracket along with it.

More work than its worth, if you ask me. Grab a new tube of TIM, it's not all that expensive, even the high-end stuff! smile.gif
