Always online is the best method to ensure there is no duping and hacking. It also makes it impossible to pirate the game because all NPCs, AI, randomization, items, etc are all server side. So the most a pirated game can do is copy a empty world and then make their own game in that world. Look at WoW private servers, none of them are anything like the real thing.

While there were queues that first week, that is completely different than what the previous quote said of only allowing so many people in that day. I would take a queue over a down server anytime.

Lets hope.. I plan to play with 2 friends at launch time and don't want any of us to be held behind for a long period of time, yes 40 seconds is nothing but what happens if you have to keep waiting another 40 seconds!!!

You'd think after 12 years, and the money WoW made Blizzard, that they would have the hardware to handle release day.

They do have the hardware but it is the matter of how much they need this is unknown until actual testing hence the reason for stress tests so they can have enough power to run the servers but not overkill and wasting resources. They will slowly increase the server until its just right.

You can't prepare for 2-5 million logins at the same time with any amount of hardware.

They will handle this launch way better than most, their track launch record is proven with SC2 and WoW expansions. They know what they are doing and a 40 second delay is one of the best ways to ensure people only have to wait (at most) 40 seconds to play. Most will still log in instantly.

From the looks of beta its because you can get people to join your server/room and coop with you. Also item drops and other such things are streamed to you its not being run from your pc then shipped over to blizzard.
