Need some help understanding LLC and offset OCing

Ok, so I understand how offset works. First I need to start with a +/- .005 offset and go from there either lowering or raising. But I know that also affects the idle voltage. So, let's say I raise the offset and that raises the idle, do I lower the LLC to lower the idle voltage? I'm a bit confused about this because I don't want to raise my idle voltage too much or lower it too much.

My understanding of LLC is that is reduces Vdroop under load, so it probably won't affect idle voltages much. If you have a higher LLC, you won't have to increase your offset as much because you won't have to worry about Vdroop.

How much of an overclock are you going for? Because anything under about 4.3 seems to require a negative offset, which lowers idle voltages and can potentially make you unstable at idle. In this case, you would want low LLC which would require a higher Vcore, keeping you stable at idle.

I'm aiming for 4.5/4.6 area. But, that will raise the idle and I don't want the idle voltage to be more than what's necessary. I mean, why use more power than what's needed, right? So, maybe I should raise the LLC in turn reducing how much offset I need?

Yes. Raise your LLC to either the highest or second highest setting. The highest setting will generally overshoot the voltage you are going for, so this should help keep your idle Vcore down. I'm using offset for my current OC (4.6 @ 1.272) and I use 75% LLC (ultra high on ASUS boards), and I idle at 1600mhz @ about 1.08.

Always wondered about offset voltage. Moved mine up to (+) smallest integer and it was going up to nearly 1.5 V VCORE in CPU-Z

What cpu? Offset voltage goes off of a value called VID. It is a reference voltage programmed in to the cpu. Each clock speed has its own VID stored within the cpu. To check VID, run coretemp while under 100% load (i use prime 95 for this) and one of the boxes in coretemp shows your VID for that clock speed.

Essentially, VID + offset = Vcore.

Hmm. I have never used any of the 1366 processors, so I may not be much help with that.

You should be able to figure it out though. If you know your offset and you know what Vcore your cpu is running at, then Vcore - offset = VID.

So in theory, if you know what Vcore you want to hit, just go Vcore(desired) - VID (calculated) = new offset.

Maybe its different for the 1366 processors, but hey, try it and see what happens.
