Is my FAN Failing?

My Cpu fan is spinning at 400rpm. it should be close 1500-2000rpm usually.

Sometimes its 1500 and other times its 400, both at idle.

Is this a sign that my fan is failing? Its a Scythe Fan I've used for awhile.

I only noticed this happening after changing the direction of the fan.

Speedfan is at 100% so I'm thinking something else is wrong.

Also - Do you guys always prefer to use the CPU Fan Pins on the motherboard to power your fans? If so, why? My fans have L,M,H controllers on them and all but the CPU fan is using molex powers.

Thanks

Do you have fan expert controller or anything else activated?

When you changed the direction of the fan did you unplug it from the fan header? Easiest way to check is to disconnect the fan, visually check the plug, pins should all sit flush to the plug. If not, push on the wires gently towards the plug end and re-connect. If you still have the problem, use a different fan to check that the fan header is working properly.

Thanks for the replies.

I just checked the fan header and connection and still only getting 400rpm. Is this just a sign that the fan is failing? I've had it for 6 years but just found it odd that after I switched the direction of the fan (I just built my computer) that it started happening.

What are some suggestions for the best quiet fan for a heatsink?

Looking at this one, any ones are def better?

It will be mounted on my Thermalright 120 Ultra heatsink. Thanks
