Looking for the Holy Grail of cases. Does it exist?

Thread Starter
I've been looking now for about a week for a case that i'm beginning to realise might not exist. But i've come here in the hope that somebody can recommend me a case that fits most of my needs.

Here is what i'm looking for in order of preference:
  1. Needs to be Quite (will have a TV as the second monitor so will need to be silent whilst watching movies)
  2. Needs to be cool (I use air cooling so hoping to accomodate a few 12cm fans, plus I have a 9500 so i'll need a decent crossflow over the mobo)
  3. Needs to look cool (would prefer a window to see the 9500 and the post LEDs, don't like front doors, the're redundant to me)
  4. Needs to be reasonable sized (my present case is 16x45x41 (WLH) so hopefully in that ballpark)
  5. Extras: I'd like the option of either the power buttons on the top or in a bay that can be moved up and down, the PSU in a seperate chamber or at the bottom

My shortlist up until this point is the P180 and Nine Hundred by Antec. I love the look of the Nine Hundred and it ticks most of the boxes but i've heard they are noisy. They look like some fancy chicken wire boxed together with some fans. The P180 is the all rounder, but I hate the door and the look of the front behind the door, which would mean I couldn't remove it, I also hate that the power button is behind the door which imo is the worst design feature of it, I shouldn't have to open a door to turn on my computer.

Any other recommendations or opinions about the 2 Antec cases? How good at cooling is the P180? How quiet is the Nine Hundred?

If your after dead quiet, the thermaltake Armor can be run with all passive heatsinks and no fans. Also the new Motxart TX is quiet even with the fans.

Mozart TX, Armor, P180, Stacker 830, Lian Li V****, the list goes on and on. There is no "Holy Grail" of cases, only a group of elite ones.

The Antec P180 is a sweet case... it comes with 3 120mm fans with speed selection. Seperate section for PSU and first HD bay, with a wind tunnel.

When I say holy grail, I mean trying to find a case that has exceptional air cooling and is ultra quiet. Cooling performance and sound dampening seem to inversely proportional. You better one, you sacrifice the other.

Oh and I need a case that at MAX is the size of the P180. I don't like MAHOOSIVE UBER cases that you need a seperate room to house. I really would go for the P180 if it wasn't for the stupid door which really serves no evident purpose, other than streamlining the case. Also the positioning of the Pwr/rst buttons would irk me to no end. I'd probably end up cutting a hole in the door so I could press them through it. Plus I like to be able to see all the fans are working and the post display, the P180 has no window and modding it would defeat the purpose of buying such an expensive soundproofed case.

Is there any quite cases out there with a window? Also what cases have the pwr/rst buttons at the top?

I agree with you about the P180 and its door, plus I didn't like the vent on top. I ended up with its little cousin, the SOLO. I do like Antec cases, they have good quality for a reasonable price. You might look at some of the other Antec mid and full towers.

I doubt you are going to find much if anything with a window that's going to be quiet. Perplex or glass just aren't very good at sound control.

Have you determined what you are going to put in the case? That will give you a size range, at least the minimum you will need, limiting the field. Then you can eliminate those that don't have the front panel/controls where you like them. Then select another feature that is essential, either have to have or must not have and eliminate those that do or those that don't as the case may be. Keep going and you will find your dream case. Heck, I've always considered the looking more than half the fun.

I dont recommened the TT armor for noiseless. If you run fans in it, a lot of noise escapes through all the different openings.

Have Antec really cornered the market with Soundproofed cases? Is there any other manufacturers that make good quiet ones (apart from Zalmans fanless solution) If I had some options for quiet cases i'd be able to narrow down my choice.

Personally I think its difficult to find a case with great airflow and low noise level running fans. Then again I sit right next to my TT armor and its pretty silent. I can only hear my old CPU fan which is starting to make alot of noise. My cousin bought an Antec Sonata and he says he loves how quiet it is.

my Asus' BIOS has power management in it. i set it so i can power on by pressing the space button on my keyboard. i know nothing about your mobo, but it might be worth looking into. my power button is also behind a door, but i haven't touched it since i set up my BIOS the way i like it.
