Need suggestion for business computers

Thread Starter
My manger wants me to build him 2 computers to get started. usually have to run multiple programs that a bit of a resource hog. Can't tell you what program tho.

Budget $500-$600ish per computer
Preferred Intel. No GPU need. Just need a system. (No mouse, monitor, etc.)
He also wants at a SSD for boot.

Now I wasn't sure what GPU to get but he wanted at least a i5 or something similar on AMD that will last a couple years.

Edit:
The program is similar to Adobe Media Encoder.
$500-$600ish per computer.

5-600 per computer? or for both? Also, give us what type of program it is or at-least what it might compare to.

This, these two things need to be answered for a proper suggestion. "Resource hog" doesn't say a lot as it is completely subjective and different types of applications use resources differently.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I would say go for a

Sandy bridge
2600k, z68 chipset mobo,
or
Ivy Bridge
3770k, z77 chipset mobo (z77 can support three monitors)
both are overclockable, if that isn't desired (which is a waste imo) go for the H chipset equivalent since you do not have a GPU.
$320

Mobo, I trust ASUS and ASROCK
$150 tops

Ram go for 1600 cas 9 not sure the amount you will need for your specific application. But anything better than that rating is pretty unneeded.
$50

As for a PSU it really depends on what kind of headrom you want. You could probably get away with someone pretty weak, but I would not skimp on a reliable company.

If you want a mATX case (you can even get a thin one since there is no GPU) then get a mATX mobo.

Crucial m4 for the SSDs as they are the most reliable it seems.

For about $100 more you could probably build that system and it would definitely power through your needs. That or just switch for a 2500k/equivalent.

since your using iGPU, go for a Ivy bridge atleast i5-3570k or i7-3770k which has HD4000 iGPU which is a vast improvement over the HD3000 iGPUs

i also agreee that a cheap H77 will surfice for a work PC smile.gif

Still over your budget but here.

I don't really know what to cut down on.

Well, this is one of the times I will recommend AMD, as you have a tight budget and seem to be using heavily threaded applications.....

So, that is a hell of a tall order for that price range. At least for a system with a high thread count if he using that type of software on it. Really what it comes down to is....

Does he really need the SSD for a boot drive, as it will pretty much just impact boot times, and not really the work?

or

Does he want a high thread count system, that will directly impact the work he is doing?

That is one way of going, but since this is getting used for work purposes and it seems that he is using applications that can utilize a high thread count, an eight core FX might be better. But going that route with a SSD brings up further budget concerns.

Well my manager decided to go with the AMD since the price is lower then intel i5's.

He wanted the SSD since he want's program to boot up fast. So I can't really say much since its not my money.

Thanks for everyone's input! biggrin.gif
