Bricked router DD-WRT flash help

Thread Starter
I have a Linksys WRT-54G V8.0 and I was trying to flash it to the dd-wrt firmware to use it as a bridge. Everything went smoothly until I got to the part where you have to use "tftp" to transfer the firmware to the router. I had to disconnect from the router to download the file since I had forgot to load it onto my linux computer (this was after I uploaded the vxworkskiller file). After I reconnected to the router the machine would not connect to the router saying that the network activation failed. I tried going through the steps fromt he beginning and got to around the same place. After I uploaded the vxworkskiller file it told me the router needed a restart so I restarted it and after the restart my computer won't connect. I tried doing a hard reset multiple times.

The only LED that is lit up is the ETHERNET port 1 led.
I am using Ubuntu 12.04

I followed these intructions:

Have you tried a 30-30-30 reset? Plug the router's power in, and then hold down the reset button with something like a key, for 30 seconds. WITHOUT lifting the reset button, unplug the router, and wait 30 seconds. KEEP HOLDING THE BUTTON, and plug the router back in, waiting another 30 seconds. This solved the problem with mine. Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for your response. What I meant by a hard reset was the 30-30-30 reset you mentioned. I went ahead and tried it again, though, making sure to follow your directions (only this time without any network cable attatched, only the power cable) and nothing happened. When the power is plugged in (both before and after 30-30-30 reset) no led's light up.

I've bricked a router before, and it's definitely not the end of the world. Use DrayTek router tools to bring it back to life. Just select the correct .bin file to reflash.

Also, you'll have to have the router plugged in directly in your comp ethernet port. Port_0, or whichever is the default.

Can I flash the dd-wrt firmware onto the router or do I have to flash the Linksys firmware onto it and then go through the steps to get dd-wrt on it?

And thanks for the link, I downloaded it and will use it on my windows machine as soon as it's finished rendering out my projects!

You can flash dd-wrt directly, without flashing to Linksys first.

3/3/3 it, then while it's starting to boot you need to ping 192.168.1.1

If you get a response, it's salvageable, if you get constant timeouts, it's a no go frown.gif

You may also need to set a static IP with the router as the default gateway so you don't get any non connected errors.

54G v8 is JTAGable if you get desperate lol.

I was not able to ping to it after a 30/30/30 boot. It would just sit sit there and not even the power LED would light up.

BlindRage, I was able to successfully flash the firmware on the router. The program gave me a time out error but I was able to login into the router via the web interface and everything seems to be running great. Now I just have to learn how to set it up as a bridge for my HTPC but there are some nice guides about how to do that on the dd-wrt website.

Thanks again for everyones help!
