I think I damaged my CPU

Thread Starter
Here's the story:

I'm a computer noob, and I'm building a comp for the first time. I got everything in: fans, motherboard, hdd, ram, wiring, even got my Intel i5 3570k chip on (that was scary).

Now, I don't have all the parts yet. I'm missing my monitor, H80 cooler, and windows cd, which are all coming on Friday.

So, impatient that I am, I turned on my comp to watch all the pretty fans spin and LEDs light up, I also heard the post beep. In fact I left the comp on for a few minutes and when I came back it was OFF.

I was a bit curious why it turned off on its own, so I got a friends monitor and hooked up and to watch the bios. I got the following error:
CPU FAN ERROR
CPU OVER TEMPERATURE ERROR

Zooooooomg, I didn't install the stock heat-sink since I'm gonna put on an h80 on Friday, but I didn't think it was THAT important. The bios showed my cpu temp hit 80 C within 30 seconds. I promptly shutdown the comp. Now I know why it turned off earlier, the CPU must've hit over 100 C and automatically turned off.

Did I damage my poor 3570k frown.gif

Tbh you probably fried your cpu, they heat up extremely quickly without any type of cooler on it. Try installing the stock cpu cooler on it and try to see if the mobo gives you any error code
post #4 of 53
Yes it is THAT important. Never ever ever ever boot a computer without a heatsink

Doesn't it automatically throttle at 95C?
I've had stock heatsink fans fail and got those 2 same errors. Never cooked the chip. Now we are talking old chips and years ago.......

I would think it would shut down before burning up,one way to find out. put the stock heatsink on and try it.
Dont panic dude, reset CMOS and wait for all your parts. Ill bet its just fine. I once did the same thing with a P4 cpu, although the heatsynk was on it just without a fan.
As for the CPU fan error that is to do with a setting in the bios which tells you the min RPM for the cpu fan. Mine is set to 300 for a guidline, if you are using air cooling. If you are using water turn the CPU fan warning off (disable).
You might get lucky and be okay. I did that with my Core duo back in the day (4 years ago or more) and I never had one problem with it.
