To keep or not to keep 7970

Thread Starter
So i'm running the Gigabyte 7970 WindForce at 1187mV 1125/1510 @ 86C max temp/100% fan speed.

This does not seem that good to me from what I've read, people with stock 7979s get this at third of the fan speed. I've had it for 5 days and have two days to decide on whether or not i should keep.

Considering those number what would you do/suggest.

If you have to run your fan or fans at 100% to maintain 86c you have problems I would think.

Yes thats high compared to others from research.

Case air flow?

Later:)

well first off, do u actually need to overclock it to max out or play games?? if not then go back to stock and enjoy.

if you have to OC it, make sure you have good airflow in your case and also make sure fan is working proper.

That's not bad at all if your ambients are slightly high (summer weather lately). I'd setup a fan profile so your fan speed is only 100% when it absolutely need to be (aka, during load). That way, when you're idle, it won't sound like you're constantly living next to an airport / greatly increase the lifespan of your fan / GPU smile.gif

Bought a £400 card I wana get as much extra performance as possible.

I'm playing at 1440p, BF3, MW3 and other demanding games (steam full of them), so the extra performance is needed.

My case flow should be fine, i have 1 140mm intake at the front, i've stuck 140mm infront (so its blowing air directly to the card) and another 120mm under the gfx card (just put in see if it changes anyhting) and a noctua d14 with tripple fans which are essentially taking the heat from the case and blowing it out.

I think case cooling is ok.

Well its on auto, so right now fan speed is 43% which is fine, its at load it goes to 100% which (having read others peoples overclocking) it shouldnt.

That's why I suggested you setup a fan profile with a program like MSI Afterburner to avoid something like this. Rather than going right to 100% on load, you can setup a profile for it to gradually increased based off of the temperature (to your choosing, of course).

Surely leaving it on auto will turn up fan speed as needed...in bf3 for example i get 80%-95% fan speed. It doesnt go right to 100% instead gradually gets there..sorry if im misunderstanding you.

A windforce card should not hit 86C at 100% fan speed in anything but an oven. Perhaps the heatsink is not seated properly. How does it perform at stock settings?

I misunderstood you, actually. You posted:

I assumed by that it was automatically going to 100% at load at all times. My apologies for misunderstanding smile.gif

Good question set everything to default and its refusing to go past 500core with Kombustor or Furmark or any game. Its only when I apply an overclock incl a voltage increase does it got past 500. Flipped to other bios now.

EDIT - seems my case is to blame partly for high temps. With the case open the temps are around 70C and not 85C.Still fan speeds are at 100% either way

But why does it not go past 500 core when stressed at stock?
