Question about removable RAID drives

Right, let me first explain what i want to achieve.

I've got 2 nearly idendical 1tb drives. One of them is mounted in an icy box caddy so it can be easily removed from the front of the pc and used as an external.

What i want is a RAID1 array set up so that the removable 1TB is in sync with the internal 1TB drive.

What i've managed to do so far is create a mirrored pair using Windows' Disk management service. This all worked well, and even once i managed to remove the external drive, reinsert it and it carried on acting like a RAID pair (it did need to resync though).

However, the majority of the time, when i reinsert the external drive, the mirror is broken and I am left with 2 HDDs that are the same but no longer in RAID.

Since the plan is to take the removable drive away to do field work then come back and have it automatically sync to the internal drive, what would my best option be??

keep them as seperate drives and try something like robocopy, it basically creates a mirror. when you put the drive back in the rig run the script and everything will sync... FreeFileSync is another

Ah so are you saying this cant actually be done by RAID? hopefully the software will achieve the same thing smile.gif thanks!

i just think RAID is too risky with constantly removing and inserting the drive.. Generally speaking RAID is for when a drive fails it can be replaced by a fresh clean drive and in the case of RAID 1 the mirrored data is copied back with no powering down (hotswap) as to maintain fault-tolerance more so than what you re wanting to achieve...

there are forms of RAID such as unRAID and flexRAID but these are more an OS designed for dedicated NAS or storage servers... smile.gif
