i found this deal

MSI GTX 460 1gb for $99 shipped.

i currently just built myself an ivy bridge build and have no gpu.

for this price is it worth getting 2 and Sli set up them?? is that going to compare to a single 580 or maybe a 680?

2X460 are better than one 580, they might be equal to or slightly less than a 680. For 200$ Thats a good deal/

thats why im really considering it! i read good reviews on gtx 460. only thing im worried about is that its such an old card layout. 4xx, 5xx now the 6xx. 3 gens old basically

They are on par with a GTX 580. They don't have the same VRAM though, so you'll be VRAM limited with two. They are also no where near a GTX 680.

You should be okay on like 95% of games in terms of VRAM. Don't expect it to be future proof though.

I've got 460's sli'd in my HTPC rig and they do quite well. For 99 bucks I'd say it's a great deal. Hell I paid 269.99 each for mine new and still am happy with the purchase.

GTX 480 SLI are somewhere around similar performance to a single 680. GTX 460 sli? meh no where near GTX 680 performance. but its a good buy if they are new, i started seeing around GTX 460 for ~80 bucks for sale , Used of course. good luck with your purchase though

VRAM is a memory buffer . So if you crank up AA/AF and such in games, you increase the VRAM being used. If this number is maxed out, you will get stuttering and gameplay will be terrible - but of course you can reduce AA and such to decrease VRAM usage but then things won't look as good.

There are some games that easily max out 1GB of VRAM which the 460 provides.
